1961

The Beatles live: Cavern Club, Liverpool (lunchtime) – 10 August 1961

The Beatles performed a lunchtime session at the Cavern Club in Mathew Street, Liverpool — one of hundreds of appearances at the venue that would define their early career.

The Beatles live: St John’s Hall, Liverpool – 10 August 1961

The seventh of eleven Beatles performances at St John’s Hall on Snaefell Avenue in Tuebrook, promoted on some nights by Mona Best, mother of drummer Pete Best.

1962

The Beatles live: Riverboat Shuffle, MV Royal Iris, River Mersey – 10 August 1962

The Beatles performed their third Riverboat Shuffle aboard the MV Royal Iris — the famous Fish And Chip Boat — supporting headliners Johnny Kidd and the Pirates. Pete Best was still the drummer; Ringo Starr would replace him just six days later.

1963

The Beatles live: Springfield Ballroom, Jersey – 10 August 1963

The fourth of five concerts during The Beatles’ Channel Islands residency, with total earnings for the trip of £1,000. One of the last occasions they could perform in an intimate ballroom setting before Beatlemania made such shows impossible.

1968

Paul McCartney interviewed for New Musical Express – 10 August 1968

Paul McCartney gave a candid interview to Alan Smith of the NME, admitting “The truth about me is that I’m pleasantly insincere.” The interview caused controversy for his remarks on India and global poverty, and included a wide-ranging discussion of Apple Corps.

1972

Wings live: Scandinavium, Gothenburg – 10 August 1972

The 15th show of the Wings Over Europe Tour — Paul McCartney’s first European concerts since 1966. The 20-song setlist included ‘Give Ireland Back to the Irish’, ‘My Love’ and ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’.

Paul and Linda McCartney and Denny Seiwell arrested for cannabis possession – 10 August 1972

Following the Scandinavium concert, armed police blocked the dressing room and arrested Paul, Linda and Denny Seiwell for possession of seven ounces of marijuana. Fines totalling £1,000 were paid and the tour continued. One Wings member later said: “Our name flies now all over the world.”

1973

Recording: Mind Games by John Lennon – 10 August 1973

The first overdub session for John Lennon’s fourth solo album at Studio B, Record Plant, New York City. Instruments delivered included a Mellotron, Fender Rhodes, congas and chimes. A reel titled ‘Mellotron Magic’ was recorded during the session.

1974

Travel: John Lennon – Los Angeles to Nederland – 10 August 1974

John Lennon and May Pang flew to Denver and drove to Caribou Ranch in Nederland, Colorado, where Elton John was recording Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy. During the visit Lennon recorded ‘Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds’ with Elton John — a US number one credited to Dr. Winston O’Boogie.

1977

Editing: Mull Of Kintyre by Wings – 10 August 1977

Wings edited ‘Mull Of Kintyre’ at the Spirit of Ranachan Studio in Campbeltown, Scotland, reducing the song’s length by 10 seconds. The day ended with a jam session titled ‘Jam (Day After Pipers)’. The song would go on to become the first UK single to sell over two million copies.

1979

US single release: Arrow Through Me by Wings – 10 August 1979

Wings’ funky, horn-driven single ‘Arrow Through Me’ was released in the United States, the second US single from Back To The Egg. It peaked at number 29 on the Billboard Hot 100. McCartney later said: “There’s a nice horn riff in it, and it’s funky.”

UK single release: Seaside Woman by Suzy And The Red Stripes – 10 August 1979

Linda McCartney’s reggae-inspired ‘Seaside Woman’, recorded during the Red Rose Speedway sessions in 1972, finally received its UK release on A&M Records. The limited edition box set included 10 seaside postcards.

2001

Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band live: Etess Arena, Atlantic City – 10 August 2001

The 11th show of the seventh All-Starr Band’s 28-date North American tour, featuring Roger Hodgson (Supertramp), Ian Hunter (Mott the Hoople), Howard Jones, Greg Lake (King Crimson/ELP), Mark Rivera and Sheila E.

2003

Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band live: WE Fest, Detroit Lakes – 10 August 2003

The 15th show of the eighth All-Starr Band’s 35-date tour, performed at the Soo Pass Ranch in Minnesota. The band featured Colin Hay (Men at Work), Paul Carrack (Ace/Squeeze/Mike + The Mechanics), John Waite (The Babys/Bad English), Mark Rivera and Sheila E.

2014

Paul McCartney live: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles – 10 August 2014

The 48th show of the Out There Tour, seen by 52,605 fans. A 39-song set spanning Beatles, Wings and solo material, with the band of Wix Wickens, Brian Ray, Rusty Anderson and Abe Laboriel Jr.

2016

Paul McCartney live: Verizon Center, Washington, DC – 10 August 2016

The 31st show of the One On One Tour and the second of two consecutive nights in Washington, DC. A 38-song set including rarities ‘Temporary Secretary’, ‘In Spite Of All The Danger’ and ‘FourFiveSeconds’.

2019

Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band live: Wolf Trap, Vienna – 10 August 2019

The 19th show of the 14th All-Starr Band’s 34-date Asia and North America tour, performed at the Filene Center at Wolf Trap National Park — the only US national park dedicated to the performing arts. The band featured Steve Lukather (Toto), Colin Hay, Gregg Rolie (Santana/Journey), Hamish Stuart (Average White Band), Warren Ham and Gregg Bissonette.
