1961

The Beatles live: Cavern Club, Liverpool (lunchtime) – 14 August 1961

The Beatles performed a lunchtime session at the Cavern Club in Liverpool during their residency at the iconic basement venue.

1963

Television: Scene At 6.30 – 14 August 1963

The Beatles appeared on the Granada Television programme Scene At 6.30 during the height of Beatlemania.

The Beatles live: Odeon Cinema, Llandudno – 14 August 1963

The Beatles performed at the Odeon Cinema in Llandudno, North Wales, during their summer season residency.

1964

Recording, mixing: I’m A Loser, Mr Moonlight, Baby’s In Black, Leave My Kitten Alone – 14 August 1964

The Beatles recorded and mixed four tracks at EMI Studios, Abbey Road, including the Lennon composition ‘I’m A Loser’ and the unreleased ‘Leave My Kitten Alone’.

1965

The Beatles’ fourth and final Ed Sullivan Show – 14 August 1965

The Beatles made their fourth and final appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, broadcast from the CBS Studio 50 in New York City.

1966

KLUE radio, Texas, is struck by lightning – 14 August 1966

KLUE radio in Longview, Texas — which had organised a public burning of Beatles records following John Lennon’s ‘more popular than Jesus’ remarks — was struck by lightning the following day, knocking its news director unconscious.

The Beatles live: Cleveland Stadium, Cleveland, Ohio – 14 August 1966

The Beatles performed at Cleveland Stadium during their final North American tour, just two weeks before their last ever concert at Candlestick Park.

1969

The Beatles worked on mixing and editing six tracks for the Abbey Road album at EMI Studios.

1970

Dick James resigns from Northern Songs – 14 August 1970

Dick James, the music publisher who had managed the Lennon-McCartney songwriting catalogue through Northern Songs, resigned from the company.

1972

Wings live: Vejlby-Risskov Hallen, Aarhus – 14 August 1972

Wings performed at the Vejlby-Risskov Hallen in Aarhus, Denmark, during their European university tour.

1973

Recording: Mind Games by John Lennon – 14 August 1973

John Lennon recorded ‘Mind Games’ at the Record Plant in New York City, the title track of his 1973 album.

1974

Recording: Husbands And Wives by Ringo Starr – 14 August 1974

Ringo Starr continued recording ‘Husbands And Wives’ — a Roger Miller cover — at Sunset Sound Recorders in Los Angeles, produced by Richard Perry, for his album Goodnight Vienna.

1978

US single release: Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band/With A Little Help From My Friends – 14 August 1978

The Beatles’ ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’/‘With A Little Help From My Friends’ was released as a US single, timed to coincide with the Peter Frampton and Bee Gees film. It peaked at number 71 on the Billboard Hot 100.

1980

Recording: You’ve Got A Nice Way, Red And Black Blues by Ringo Starr – 14 August 1980

Ringo Starr finished recording ‘You’ve Got A Nice Way’ at Devonshire Sound Studios in Los Angeles, produced by Stephen Stills, for his album Stop And Smell The Roses.

Recording: I Don’t Wanna Face It, Walking On Thin Ice, (Forgive Me) My Little Flower Princess – 14 August 1980

The seventh Double Fantasy recording session took place at the Hit Factory in New York. John Lennon told Yoko Ono after recording ‘Walking On Thin Ice’: “I think you just cut your first number one, Yoko.” He was carrying the master tape when he was shot on 8 December 1980.

2001

Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band live: Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Fort Lauderdale – 14 August 2001

The seventh All-Starr Band — featuring Roger Hodgson, Ian Hunter, Howard Jones, Greg Lake, Mark Rivera and Sheila E — performed the 14th show of their 28-date North American tour.

2010

Paul McCartney live: Wells Fargo Center, Philadelphia – 14 August 2010

McCartney performed to 30,000 fans during the Up And Coming Tour. After ‘Yesterday’, he called breast cancer survivor Marta McGovern onto the stage and signed her lower back, and hugged disabled fan Dara Roberts, bringing the microphone to her so she could say “Hello Philadelphia.”

2013

Paul McCartney live: Mosaic Stadium, Regina – 14 August 2013

McCartney performed to 38,750 fans at Mosaic Stadium in Regina, Saskatchewan, the 26th show of the 91-date Out There Tour.

2014

Paul McCartney live: Candlestick Park, San Francisco – 14 August 2014

McCartney performed the final ever concert at Candlestick Park — 48 years after The Beatles played their last concert at the same venue on 29 August 1966. He closed with ‘Long Tall Sally’, the same song that ended The Beatles’ final show. The 54-year-old stadium was subsequently demolished.

2019

Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band live: Metropolitan Opera House, Philadelphia – 14 August 2019

The 14th All-Starr Band — featuring Steve Lukather, Colin Hay, Gregg Rolie, Hamish Stuart, Warren Ham and Gregg Bissonette — performed the 22nd show of their 34-date Asia and North America tour.

2024

John and Yoko documentary Daytime Revolution announced – 14 August 2024

A documentary on John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s 1972 week co-hosting The Mike Douglas Show was announced for US cinema release on 9 October 2024, directed by Erik Nelson and featuring archival footage and interviews with surviving guests including Bobby Seale, George Carlin and Ralph Nader.

John Lennon’s Mind Games (Meditation Mixes) to be released – 14 August 2024

A special edition of John Lennon’s 1973 album, produced by Sean Ono Lennon, was announced for release on 11 October 2024 — featuring nine radically extended Meditation Mixes and nine infinite loop mantras on vinyl.

2025

John Lennon and Yoko Ono reissues Power To The People announced – 14 August 2025

A major 9CD/3Blu-ray box set reissue of the Some Time In New York City era was announced for release on 10 October 2025, compiled by Sean Ono Lennon and featuring 92 previously unreleased recordings including the near-complete One To One Concerts from Madison Square Garden — John Lennon’s last full public performances.
