Paul McCartney performed at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 14 August 2010 before a crowd of 30,000 people. The band took to the stage at 8.30pm. It was the 22nd concert of the Up And Coming Tour and the first of two consecutive nights in Philadelphia, with a second show following on 15 August.

On-stage moments

The concert produced two memorable on-stage moments that went beyond the music. Following his solo performance of ‘Yesterday’, McCartney called a woman named Marta McGovern onto the stage. She had been holding up a sign reading “I beat breast cancer! Sign me for a tattoo?” McCartney obliged, signing her lower back to the delight of the crowd.

A disabled girl named Dara Roberts was then brought onto the stage. McCartney hugged her and brought the microphone to her lips. To cheers from the 30,000-strong audience, she said “Hello Philadelphia.” The moment was characteristic of McCartney’s long-standing instinct for genuine human connection with his audiences — a quality that has defined his live performances across six decades.

McCartney’s touring band had been a remarkably stable unit since the early 2000s. Paul ‘Wix’ Wickens had been with McCartney since the 1989 World Tour. Brian Ray and Rusty Anderson joined for the Driving World Tour in 2002, and Abe Laboriel Jr — son of the celebrated session bassist Abraham Laboriel — had been McCartney’s drummer since 2001. The band’s longevity together gave the live shows a tightness and musical empathy that reviewers consistently praised.

The 39-song set was a characteristically comprehensive survey of McCartney’s career, spanning Beatles classics, Wings material and solo songs. The opening trio of ‘Venus And Mars’/‘Rock Show’/‘Jet’ — drawn from the 1975 Wings album Venus and Mars — had become a standard McCartney concert opener. ‘Something’, George Harrison’s composition from Abbey Road, was performed on ukulele as a tribute to his late bandmate. The show closed with ‘The End’ — the final track of Abbey Road and, fittingly, the last song The Beatles ever recorded together.

The 14 August 2010 concert was McCartney’s fourth visit to the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. He had previously performed there on 16 April 2002 (Driving World Tour) and on 22 and 23 September 2005 (US Tour). He returned on 21 June 2015 for the Out There Tour.
