Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band performed at the Metropolitan Opera House in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 14 August 2019 — the 22nd show of the 14th All-Starr Band’s tour of Asia and North America. The tour ran for 34 dates between March and September 2019, opening in Japan before crossing to North America for the summer leg. Ringo returned to the Metropolitan Opera House on 11 September 2022.

The 14th All-Starr Band was a particularly strong lineup, spanning rock, pop, Latin rock and R&B. Steve Lukather — lead guitarist and co-founder of Toto, and one of the most recorded session guitarists in history — had become a regular All-Starr Band presence. Colin Hay, the Scottish-Australian singer-songwriter and co-founder of Men at Work, brought the beloved ‘Down Under’ and ‘Overkill’ and ‘Who Can It Be Now?’ to the set. Gregg Rolie was a founding member of both Santana and Journey, and his keyboard work on ‘Evil Ways’, ‘Black Magic Woman’, ‘Gypsy Queen’ and ‘Oye Cómo Va’ gave the show a powerful Latin rock dimension. Hamish Stuart, vocalist and bassist of the Average White Band, contributed the funk classics ‘Pick Up The Pieces’, ‘Cut The Cake’ and ‘Work To Do’. Gregg Bissonette, a highly regarded session drummer who had worked with David Lee Roth and Joe Satriani among many others, provided a second drum kit alongside Ringo.

The 26-song set was a characteristically eclectic All-Starr Band programme. Gregg Rolie’s four songs formed a mini-Santana/Journey retrospective at the heart of the show, including the medley of ‘Black Magic Woman’/‘Gypsy Queen’ that Santana had made famous on their 1970 live album Abraxas. Steve Lukather delivered Toto’s two biggest hits in ‘Rosanna’ and ‘Africa’. Colin Hay’s three songs covered the full range of Men at Work’s catalogue. Hamish Stuart’s Average White Band contributions — ‘Pick Up The Pieces’, ‘Cut The Cake’ and ‘Work To Do’ — gave the show a deep funk groove. The show closed with ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’ and ‘Give Peace A Chance’, Ringo’s traditional All-Starr Band finale.
