Ringo Starr: Beatles History, Solo Career, Songs & Legacy
Sir Richard Starkey MBE (born 7 July 1940), known professionally as Ringo Starr, was the drummer of The Beatles and one of the most beloved figures in rock history. This page covers his full story β from the Cavern Club to the All-Starr Band, and from Photograph to his ongoing solo career.
Early Life & The Beatles
Born Richard Starkey in the Dingle area of Liverpool on 7 July 1940, Ringo spent much of his childhood in hospital with serious illness. He took up drumming as therapy and became one of the most in-demand drummers on the Liverpool circuit, playing with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes before joining The Beatles in August 1962, replacing Pete Best.

Ringo Starr as a Drummer
Ringo Starr is one of the most influential drummers in rock history. His feel, his musicality, and his restraint β always serving the song rather than showcasing technique β defined the Beatles' sound. His drum pattern on Ticket to Ride is proto-heavy rock; his work on Come Together is a masterclass in groove. John Lennon said Ringo was the best rock drummer in the world.
