John Lennon: Beatles History, Solo Career, Songs & Legacy

John Winston Ono Lennon (9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980) was a founding member of The Beatles and one of the most influential musicians and songwriters of the 20th century. This page covers his full story – from the Cavern Club to Abbey Road, and from Imagine to Double Fantasy.

Early Life & The Formation of The Beatles

Born in Liverpool on 9 October 1940, Lennon formed The Quarrymen in 1956. On 6 July 1957 he met Paul McCartney, and by 1960 the group had evolved into The Beatles. Their formative years were spent performing in Liverpool and Hamburg, building the raw energy that would underpin their global success.

John Lennon as a Songwriter

The Lennon–McCartney partnership produced some of the most recognisable songs ever written. Lennon's writing evolved from the direct energy of early rock 'n' roll to the introspective, psychedelic and experimental work of the later years.
