Let It Be is the most complicated album in the Beatles' catalogue β complicated in its creation, its production, its release, and its legacy. Recorded in January 1969 with the intention of capturing the band playing live in the studio, it became instead a document of a group falling apart. Released in May 1970, three weeks after McCartney announced he was leaving the band, it was the last Beatles album the public heard β though Abbey Road had been recorded after it.
It contains some of their most beloved songs. It also contains some of their most painful moments. It is, in every sense, the end.
Background: Get Back, the Rooftop, and Phil Spector
The Get Back Project
The project began in January 1969 with a simple idea: The Beatles would rehearse new songs, then perform them live β either in a concert hall, an amphitheatre, or on television. The sessions took place at Twickenham Film Studios and then at the band's own Apple Corps studio in Savile Row, London, with filmmaker Michael Lindsay-Hogg documenting everything.
What the cameras captured was extraordinary β and not in the way anyone had hoped. Arguments between Harrison and Lennon. McCartney directing and cajoling. Yoko Ono's constant presence. Harrison quitting and returning. The dream of a live performance quietly abandoned. And yet, amid the tension, some remarkable music was made.
The Rooftop Concert
On 30 January 1969, The Beatles performed live for the last time β on the rooftop of the Apple Corps building at 3 Savile Row, London. They played for 42 minutes before the Metropolitan Police arrived and asked them to stop. The set included Get Back, Don't Let Me Down, I've Got a Feeling, One After 909, and Dig a Pony. It remains one of the most extraordinary moments in rock history.
Phil Spector and the Controversy
The original sessions produced hours of recordings that the band were largely unhappy with. The tapes were handed to American producer Phil Spector in early 1970, who added orchestral overdubs and choral arrangements β most controversially to The Long and Winding Road, which McCartney had recorded as a spare piano ballad. McCartney was furious. He later released Let It Be... Naked (2003), a stripped-back version of the album without Spector's additions, which many consider the definitive version.

Side One
Two of Us β McCartney's acoustic duet with Lennon, written about driving aimlessly with Linda Eastman (soon to be Linda McCartney). One of the warmest, most intimate recordings in the Beatles' catalogue β two old friends, singing together for the last time.
Dig a Pony β Lennon's rooftop performance piece, a stream-of-consciousness lyric he later dismissed as meaningless. The performance, captured live on the roof, has an energy the studio version lacks.
Across the Universe β One of Lennon's most beautiful compositions, written in 1967 and recorded multiple times before finding its home here. The lyric β "Jai guru deva om / Nothing's gonna change my world" β is among the most serene he ever wrote. Spector added strings and choir; the Naked version is starker and arguably more powerful.
I Me Mine β Harrison's waltz, written after watching Lennon and Yoko dance at a session. Lennon had already left the band by the time it was recorded; McCartney, Harrison, and Starr completed it without him. It was the last song recorded by any Beatle for a Beatles album.
Dig It β A Lennon-led improvisation, edited down from a much longer jam. Chaotic and fun β a glimpse of the sessions' more relaxed moments.
Let It Be β McCartney's hymn, inspired by a dream in which his mother Mary β who died when he was fourteen β came to him and offered comfort. "When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me." One of the most covered songs in history. George Harrison's guitar solo on the single version differs from the album version β both are essential.
Maggie Mae β A brief, affectionate fragment of a traditional Liverpool folk song, performed by the band during the Twickenham sessions. Sixteen seconds of pure nostalgia.
Side Two
I've Got a Feeling β A Lennon-McCartney composite β two unfinished songs spliced together, with each singing their own section simultaneously in the middle. Performed on the rooftop with extraordinary energy.
One After 909 β A Lennon-McCartney composition written in 1957, one of the earliest surviving Beatles songs. Recorded and rejected during the Please Please Me sessions, finally released here. The rooftop performance is joyful β two old friends playing a song they wrote as teenagers.
The Long and Winding Road β McCartney's piano ballad, written about the road from Campbeltown to his farm in Scotland. Spector's orchestral overdubs transformed it into something McCartney never intended. The Naked version β just piano, bass, drums, and voice β is devastating in its simplicity. The Spector version reached #1 in the US as the band's final single.
For You Blue β Harrison's straightforward twelve-bar blues, written for Pattie Boyd. Lennon plays slide guitar on a HΓΆfner bass laid across his lap. One of the album's most relaxed and enjoyable tracks.
Get Back β McCartney's driving rocker, originally conceived as a satirical comment on anti-immigration sentiment before becoming a more straightforward piece about returning to one's roots. The rooftop version β the last song The Beatles ever performed in public β ends with Lennon's famous quip: "I'd like to say thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves, and I hope we passed the audition."

Cultural Impact and Legacy
Let It Be is the most debated album in the Beatles' catalogue. The Spector controversy has never fully resolved β Let It Be... Naked offers one answer, but the original remains the version most people know. Peter Jackson's 2021 documentary Get Back β assembled from the original Lindsay-Hogg footage β transformed how the sessions are understood, revealing more warmth, humour, and creativity than the original film had suggested.
The rooftop concert remains one of the defining moments in rock history. Let It Be the song has been performed at funerals, weddings, protests, and moments of national grief around the world. And Lennon's final quip β "I hope we passed the audition" β is the most perfectly judged exit line in the history of popular music.
