On 4 November 2011, Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band performed at the Movistar Arena in Santiago, Chile. The concert brought his Beatles songs and solo hits together with the best-known recordings of Rick Derringer, Edgar Winter, Gary Wright, Richard Page and Wally Palmar.
Santiago was the second November stop after Mexico City on 1 November. The same seven-piece lineup had already toured Europe that summer, including Liverpool’s Empire Theatre on 18 June. After Chile, the musicians continued to Buenos Aires and a run of Brazilian concerts ending in Olinda on 20 November.
The All-Starr Band in Santiago
The All-Starr format shared the lead vocals between Ringo and his guests. Rather than supplying only backing for Ringo’s catalogue, the group performed a selection of each singer’s own hits. Gregg Bissonette’s presence on drums allowed Ringo to move between the front of the stage and the drum kit.
| Musician | Instruments and vocals | Featured repertoire |
|---|---|---|
| Ringo Starr | Vocals, drums and percussion | Beatles songs and solo recordings |
| Wally Palmar | Vocals, guitar and harmonica | ‘Talking In Your Sleep’, ‘What I Like About You’ |
| Rick Derringer | Vocals and guitar | ‘Hang On Sloopy’, ‘Rock And Roll, Hoochie Koo’ |
| Edgar Winter | Vocals, keyboards and saxophone | ‘Free Ride’, ‘Frankenstein’ |
| Gary Wright | Vocals and keyboards | ‘Dream Weaver’, ‘Love Is Alive’ |
| Richard Page | Vocals and bass guitar | ‘Kyrie’, ‘Broken Wings’ |
| Gregg Bissonette | Drums and backing vocals | Drum and vocal support throughout the show |
Palmar represented The Romantics, Page brought the songs of Mr. Mister, and Derringer’s selections connected his work with The McCoys to his solo career. Winter and Wright supplied contrasting keyboard-led material, from the instrumental ‘Frankenstein’ to ‘Dream Weaver’.
Beatles songs and Ringo’s solo material
The concert opened with ‘It Don’t Come Easy’, followed by ‘Honey Don’t’ and ‘Choose Love’. Ringo’s songs remained interspersed with the guest performances, rather than being confined to one section of the evening. ‘The Other Side Of Liverpool’ and ‘Back Off Boogaloo’ appeared alongside ‘Photograph’ and the Beatles favourites.
‘I Wanna Be Your Man’, ‘Yellow Submarine’ and ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’ represented songs closely associated with Ringo’s lead vocals during his years in The Beatles. ‘Boys’, ‘Honey Don’t’ and ‘Act Naturally’ brought in the rock ’n’ roll and country covers that were also part of his Beatles repertoire. A contemporary report in the Chilean publication El Dínamo highlighted ‘Yellow Submarine’, ‘Broken Wings’, ‘What I Like About You’ and ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’ in its account of the concert. Its coverage reflects the breadth of the programme: Beatles material, Ringo’s solo songs and the guests’ hits all shared the same stage.
