Paul McCartney gets back to San Antonio
On Saturday, 25 October 2025, Paul McCartney performed at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The Got Back concert returned him to a venue he had first played more than three decades earlier, on 29 May 1993 during the New World Tour.
The evening connected several generations of McCartney’s music. “Help!” opened a programme that moved through Beatles favourites, Wings songs and solo material, with “In Spite of All the Danger” reaching back to the Quarrymen and “Now and Then” representing a much more recent chapter of Beatles history.
A separate soundcheck offered another selection of songs before the main event. Keeping those two programmes distinct is essential: the soundcheck included “Flaming Pie”, “Women and Wives” and “Mrs Vandebilt”, while the evening concert followed its own 35-song running order.

Returning to the Alamodome after 1993
McCartney’s relationship with the Alamodome began during the venue’s opening period in 1993. His return in 2025 therefore carried a different historical significance from a first visit to a new stadium: it linked two major touring eras separated by more than thirty years.
The official 2025 tour diary also distinguished this return from McCartney’s more recent San Antonio appearance at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts in 2014. The 2025 show was a return to the Alamodome, not his first appearance anywhere in San Antonio since 1993.
Compare the two stadium visits through our account of the 1993 Alamodome concert. The venue remained the connection, but the songs available to McCartney had expanded through decades of subsequent recording.
The band and the horn section
McCartney performed with Paul “Wix” Wickens, Brian Ray, Rusty Anderson and Abe Laboriel Jr., joined by a three-piece horn section.
- Paul McCartney: lead vocals, bass, guitar and piano.
- Paul “Wix” Wickens: keyboards, guitar, harmonica, percussion and vocals.
- Brian Ray: guitar, bass and vocals.
- Rusty Anderson: guitar and vocals.
- Abe Laboriel Jr.: drums and vocals.
- Kenji Fenton: saxophone.
- Mike Davis: trumpet.
- Paul Burton: trombone.
The core band’s ability to change instruments and arrangements supported the wide-ranging programme. The horns added another live instrumental colour to a show whose catalogue included brass-led Beatles material and the expansive arrangements associated with Wings.
From Help! to Now and Then
Opening with “Help!” immediately placed the Beatles at the centre of the evening. “Coming Up”, “Got to Get You Into My Life” and “Drive My Car” followed, before Wings and later solo songs broadened the programme.
The set did not move in chronological order. “Come On to Me” appeared among older songs, while the acoustic passage placed “In Spite of All the Danger” beside “Love Me Do” and “Dance Tonight”. Rather than presenting one album or era, the concert drew connections across McCartney’s working life.
“Blackbird” and “Here Today” created a quieter centre, followed by “Now and Then”. Later, “Something” provided a George Harrison connection, and the encore included “I’ve Got a Feeling” with John Lennon’s filmed rooftop performance forming part of the presentation.
These were distinct kinds of remembrance. “Here Today” is McCartney’s own song, “Something” was written by Harrison, and the “I’ve Got a Feeling” sequence used archival Lennon footage. They should not be described as interchangeable tributes or as appearances by the former bandmates themselves.

A stadium finale with a familiar ending
The later stages brought together Wings rockers, Beatles singalongs and the closing medley. “Band on the Run”, “Get Back”, “Let It Be”, “Live and Let Die” and “Hey Jude” formed the final stretch before the encore.
After “I’ve Got a Feeling”, the programme moved through the Sgt. Pepper reprise and “Helter Skelter” before reaching “Golden Slumbers”. That closing sequence connected a large-scale stadium production with the final side of Abbey Road, a familiar ending to many McCartney live performances.
Now and Then merchandise
With “Now and Then” included in the San Antonio set, this Beatles design offers a direct connection to one of the evening’s songs.
