George Martin honoured by the Grammy Foundation – 12 July 2008

Saturday 12 July 2008 | McCarthy Quad, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, USA

The Beatles' producer Sir George Martin was presented with a career award by The Recording Academy's Grammy Foundation on 12 July 2008. The ceremony took place at the McCarthy Quad, University of Southern California, in Los Angeles.

The Ceremony

The evening featured performances in Martin's honour from three of popular music's most celebrated figures: Burt Bacharach, Jeff Beck, and Tom Jones. Among those in attendance were Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison, widow of George Harrison.

Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr were unable to attend, as both were on tour at the time. Martin acknowledged their absence with characteristic warmth:

Yoko and Olivia are here tonight. Paul and Ringo can't be here, because they're doing their own tour. They're workaholics. I can't understand why, but they are.

I miss a lot of people. I miss so many people who have died on me. God knows I'm old enough. But younger people have left the scene, and I miss them, as you do.

Great people; John and George particularly.

George Martin's Legacy

George Martin is widely regarded as the most successful record producer of all time. His achievements include:

  • More than 50 chart-topping hits
  • More than one billion units sold
  • The record for the longest run of number one chart hits in history, spanning 36 years

Martin signed The Beatles to Parlophone in 1962 after every other major label had rejected them, and produced all but one of their studio albums. His contributions to the group's sound — from the string arrangement on 'Yesterday' to the orchestral climax of 'A Day In The Life' — were fundamental to their artistic development. He was knighted in 1996.

Martin had largely retired from record production by 2008 following significant hearing loss, but remained a beloved and respected figure in the music industry. He died on 8 March 2016, aged 90.
