Wings Live at the Capital Centre, Landover – 15 May 1976

Saturday 15 May 1976 | Live Performance | Capital Centre, Landover, Maryland, USA

On the evening of Saturday 15th May 1976, Wings performed at the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland — the 36th date of the 65-show Wings Over the World Tour, and the first of two consecutive nights at the venue. The show came the day after two nights at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, and placed Wings in the Washington DC metropolitan area for the weekend. It was the heart of the North American leg of the most ambitious concert tour any former Beatle had undertaken.

The Capital Centre, Landover

The Capital Centre was the primary indoor arena serving the Washington DC metropolitan area, located in Landover, Prince George’s County, Maryland — approximately ten miles east of the US Capitol. Opened in 1973, it had a capacity of around 19,000 for concerts and served as the home of the Washington Bullets basketball team and the Washington Capitals ice hockey team, as well as one of the major concert venues on the East Coast touring circuit.

For Wings, playing the Capital Centre on consecutive nights (15 and 16 May) reflected the scale of demand for the tour in the Washington area. The venue was one of the largest on the North American leg, and the two-night stand placed Wings alongside the biggest acts in the world in terms of their drawing power.

The Band

  • Paul McCartney — vocals, guitar, bass guitar, keyboards
  • Linda McCartney — vocals, keyboards
  • Denny Laine — vocals, guitar, bass guitar
  • Jimmy McCulloch — guitar, vocals
  • Joe English — drums

The band was augmented by a four-piece horns and brass section: Howie Casey, Tony Dorsey, Steve Howard, and Thaddeus Richard.

The Setlist

The 29-song set was the standard Wings Over the World Tour programme — a sequence that opened with the Venus and Mars suite and moved through the full arc of Wings’ catalogue, from the early Wild Life material to the recent Wings at the Speed of Sound singles. The inclusion of Beatles songs — ‘Lady Madonna’, ‘The Long and Winding Road’, ‘I’ve Just Seen a Face’, ‘Blackbird’, and ‘Yesterday’ — marked McCartney’s decisive return to performing his Beatles catalogue live, a decade after The Beatles’ final concert. ‘Live and Let Die’ arrived with pyrotechnics; ‘Band on the Run’ closed the main set before the encores.
