Thursday 30 March 1967 | Photography, Sgt Pepper

On 30 March 1967, The Beatles gathered at Chelsea Manor Photo Studios in London for one of the most important photo sessions in music history — the creation of the iconic cover for Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Before heading to a late-night recording session at Abbey Road, the band arrived at photographer Michael Cooper’s studio, where an elaborate set had already been assembled over eight days. Designed by artist Peter Blake and Jann Haworth, the scene featured a vibrant collage of cultural icons surrounding The Beatles in their now-famous military-style uniforms. The shoot came just one day after an intensive recording session on 29 March, as the album neared completion.

The Creation of an Iconic Album Cover

The concept originated from Paul McCartney, who imagined The Beatles performing as an alter ego band, surrounded by figures they admired. With input from art dealer Robert Fraser, the idea evolved into a bold visual statement combining music, art, and pop culture. This era of creativity is explored further in our guide to the Psychedelic Era (1967–1968).

The band contributed suggestions for the figures included in the collage — ranging from writers and philosophers to actors and musicians. Some controversial choices, including figures proposed by John Lennon, were ultimately excluded from the final design. The songs that filled this landmark record are listed in full on our Sgt. Pepper’s full UK tracklist page.

The final composition became one of the most recognisable album covers ever created, helping to elevate the LP format into a serious artistic medium.

The Photo Session

The shoot took place at 4 Chelsea Manor Studios, 1–11 Flood Street, just off King’s Road in Chelsea. Photographer Michael Cooper captured a series of images, including:

  • The front cover image
  • The reverse sleeve photograph
  • The gatefold interior portraits

The session also included appearances from Beatles associates such as Mal Evans, and resulted in dozens of prints and negatives used throughout the album’s packaging. The months leading up to this shoot were packed with landmark studio sessions — including Getting Better on 9 March and the band performing Sgt. Pepper’s as a live concert at Abbey Road on 6 March.
