Beatles Sgt Pepper Session 31 March 1967 – Mr Kite & With A Little Help

The Beatles Complete “Mr. Kite!” and Mix “With A Little Help From My Friends” – 31 March 1967

Friday 31 March 1967 | Studio Two, Abbey Road | Sgt. Pepper Sessions

On 31 March 1967, The Beatles returned to Studio Two at EMI Studios, Abbey Road, for a crucial session during the making of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

The evening focused on both mixing and final overdubs, bringing two key album tracks closer to completion: With A Little Help From My Friends and Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite!.

Mixing “With A Little Help From My Friends”

The session began with 15 mono mixes of With A Little Help From My Friends, with the final mix selected for inclusion on the album.

During this process, Ringo Starr’s lead vocal was enhanced using artificial double-tracking (ADT), a studio technique pioneered at Abbey Road to thicken and enrich vocal recordings.

Completing “Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite!”

The Beatles then turned their attention to Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite!, recording the final overdubs that completed the track.

Additional organ and glockenspiel parts were layered onto the closing section, further enhancing the song’s distinctive carnival atmosphere.

Following this, seven mono mixes were created, with mix four chosen as the definitive version for the album.

Late-Night Sgt. Pepper Session

The session, produced by George Martin and engineered by Geoff Emerick, continued into the early hours, finally concluding at 3.00am on 1 April 1967.

This period of intense studio experimentation defined the Sgt. Pepper sessions, with innovative techniques and meticulous mixing shaping one of the most influential albums in music history.
