Recording 'Getting Better' and 'Lovely Rita' – Abbey Road Studios, 21 March 1967

Tuesday 21 March 1967 | Studio, Sgt Pepper, John Lennon

On 21 March 1967, The Beatles returned to Studio Two at EMI Studios, Abbey Road to continue work on two songs for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band: 'Getting Better' and 'Lovely Rita'.

The session, produced by George Martin and engineered by Geoff Emerick, became one of the most unusual of the entire Sgt Pepper project. It is most notable as the only known occasion when John Lennon accidentally took LSD during a recording session.

Work on 'Getting Better'

The backing track for 'Getting Better' had already been recorded on 9 and 10 March 1967. On this day, the focus shifted to refining the arrangement and preparing vocal overdubs.

The session began with repeated playbacks of the track, with Paul McCartney taking a leading role in shaping the sound. He worked closely with Geoff Emerick, adjusting balances and experimenting with different mixes.

To create additional recording space on the four-track tape, two reduction mixes were made. These combined earlier recordings, consolidating instruments such as:

  • Rhythm track and tambura
  • Bass guitar and drum overdubs

With the technical groundwork complete, The Beatles gathered around a single microphone to record vocal parts, singing along to the pre-recorded backing track through headphones.

A Session Observed

Among those present in the studio were several notable visitors, including music publisher Dick James, NEMS executive Peter Brown, and Ivan Vaughan, who had famously introduced John Lennon to Paul McCartney in 1957.

Also observing the session was writer Hunter Davies, who had recently been commissioned to write The Beatles' authorised biography. His detailed notes from sessions such as this one would later provide valuable insight into the band's working methods during the Sgt Pepper era.

John Lennon's LSD Incident

During the session, John Lennon began to feel unwell. It later emerged that he had accidentally taken LSD, mistaking it for a stimulant he intended to use to stay alert during the long recording session.

Recognising that Lennon was in no condition to continue working, George Martin took him to the roof of Abbey Road Studios for fresh air, avoiding the crowds of fans gathered outside the building.

The session effectively came to an end for Lennon at that point, and work on 'Getting Better' would continue at a later date, with vocals re-recorded on 23 March 1967.

After leaving the studio, McCartney accompanied Lennon home to ensure he was safe, marking the first time the two had taken LSD together.

Work on 'Lovely Rita'

Following Lennon's departure, work continued on 'Lovely Rita', another track destined for the Sgt Pepper album.

George Martin recorded a distinctive piano solo for the song, using an unusual technique that involved altering the speed of the tape machine. This created a brighter, more energetic sound when played back at normal speed.

The session concluded with the creation of a mono mix of the song. A total of 15 attempts were made, with the best sections edited together to form the final version.

Although stereo mixing would take place later, this session effectively completed the main recording work on 'Lovely Rita'.

An Unusual Sgt Pepper Session

The events of 21 March 1967 highlight both the experimental nature of The Beatles' studio work and the unpredictable atmosphere surrounding the Sgt Pepper sessions.

While the technical innovations and musical developments were significant, the session is equally remembered for Lennon's accidental LSD experience — a moment that stands out even within the band's famously psychedelic period.
