The Beatles Live at the Cavern Club, Liverpool (First Evening Show) – 21 March 1961
Tuesday 21 March 1961 | Live
On 21st March 1961, The Beatles gave their first evening performance at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, marking an important step in their growing presence at the venue that would become central to their early career.
Up to this point, the band had made 11 previous appearances at the Cavern, all of which had been lunchtime sessions. This show represented their transition into the club's evening programme, where larger audiences and more established acts typically performed.
Breaking Into the Cavern's Evening Scene
The Beatles' first night-time booking came about through Cavern Club owner Ray McFall, who relied on DJ Bob Wooler to recommend emerging beat groups.
Wooler had strongly encouraged McFall to book The Beatles after seeing their powerful performances following their return from Hamburg. However, fitting them into the Cavern's schedule was not straightforward.
The club's weekly programming was structured around different musical styles:
- Midweek – beat and skiffle groups
- Weekends – traditional jazz
- Other nights – modern jazz
As a result, The Beatles were booked for a Tuesday night "guest night", supporting The Blue Genes, a group who would later achieve success as The Swinging Blue Jeans.
A Divided Reaction
The performance received a mixed reaction from musicians and audiences alike.
Some established performers at the Cavern were unimpressed by The Beatles' raw and energetic style, which contrasted with the more polished sound expected by certain groups.
Members of The Blue Genes reportedly criticised the band's appearance and musicianship, describing their performance as rough and unrefined.
However, audience members responded very differently. Many were struck by the band's energy and distinctive repertoire, which included songs rarely heard in Liverpool at the time.
One attendee, Joey Bower of The Four Jays, later recalled:
"This was the first time I had seen The Beatles and they were in black leather and dripping with sweat. They were doing songs that I'd never heard before… They did an absolutely fantastic version of 'Besame Mucho', one of the best things I've ever heard on stage."
The Beatles' Early Cavern Reputation
The Beatles' appearance at the Cavern Club in early 1961 reflected the band's developing identity following their time performing in Hamburg.
They brought back a harder-edged sound, influenced by American rock 'n' roll and rhythm and blues, which set them apart from many of their Liverpool contemporaries.
Although some musicians initially dismissed their style as unpolished, audiences increasingly responded to their energy, charisma and originality.
DJ Bob Wooler later noted that The Beatles performed 'Hippy Hippy Shake' during this early evening appearance, a song they had learned from his own record collection.
The Cavern Club and The Beatles
The Cavern Club would become the venue most closely associated with The Beatles' rise to fame.
Although the exact number of performances is not definitively known, the band played there at least:
- 155 lunchtime shows
- 125 evening performances
Their final appearance at the Cavern took place on 3 August 1963, by which time Beatlemania had already transformed their career.
A Turning Point in Liverpool
The 21 March 1961 evening performance marked a key moment in The Beatles' development within Liverpool's music scene.
Moving from lunchtime sessions to evening shows allowed them to reach larger audiences and compete alongside more established acts.
Within months, their growing popularity at the Cavern Club would help attract the attention of Brian Epstein, who first saw the band perform there later that year.
