The Top Ten Club
The Top Ten Club was located at 136 Reeperbahn, in the heart of Hamburg's St Pauli entertainment district. It had opened in 1960 under the ownership of Peter Eckhorn, who had previously worked at the Kaiserkeller — the club where The Beatles had played their first Hamburg residency in 1960 under Bruno Koschmider. Eckhorn offered The Beatles better pay and conditions than Koschmider, which had contributed to a bitter falling-out and the deportation of George Harrison (who was under 18) and the arrest of McCartney and Best on a minor charge at the end of 1960.
The Top Ten attracted a more cosmopolitan crowd than the Kaiserkeller, including art students from the Hochschule für bildende Künste — among them Astrid Kirchherr and Klaus Voormann, who had become close friends of the group during the 1960 residency. Kirchherr had photographed The Beatles extensively and was engaged to Stuart Sutcliffe, who had remained in Hamburg when the others returned to Liverpool.
The Group in May 1961
The Beatles at this point consisted of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Pete Best on drums. Stuart Sutcliffe had left the group in early 1961 to study painting at the Hochschule and to be with Kirchherr; McCartney had taken over on bass. Tony Sheridan, a British rock and roll singer based in Hamburg, was a regular performer at the Top Ten and often shared the stage with The Beatles. During this residency, the group recorded with Sheridan for producer Bert Kaempfert — sessions that produced 'My Bonnie' and 'The Saints', released under the name Tony Sheridan and The Beat Brothers. These were the first commercial recordings to feature The Beatles.
The Hours
Peter Eckhorn paid each of The Beatles 35DM (£3) per day. They were required to play from 7pm until 2am each weekday, and from 8pm until 4am on weekends, with a 15-minute break in each hour. On a Sunday night — as 21 May 1961 was — this meant eight hours on stage. The performances at the Top Ten were so successful that Eckhorn twice extended The Beatles' contract. They eventually left Germany following their final show at the club on 1 July 1961, having performed on stage for 503 hours during their stay.
