Recording: ‘Help!’ – Abbey Road Studio Two
Tuesday 13 April 1965 | Recording, Help!, Abbey Road
On 13 April 1965, The Beatles recorded the title track for their second feature film and fifth UK album, Help!, during an evening session at EMI Studios, Abbey Road. The session took place in Studio Two between 7:00pm and 11:15pm, under the production of George Martin with engineering by Norman Smith.
This was the third major commitment of the day — following the Help! slow motion filming at Twickenham and a live BBC Pop Inn radio interview.
Title Selection and Songwriting Context
The song was written by John Lennon after the film’s title had been finalised, following the rejection of several alternative titles:
- Beatles 2 (suggested by director Richard Lester)
- Eight Arms To Hold You (suggested by Ringo Starr)
- Who’s Been Sleeping In My Porridge (George Harrison)
- The Day The Clowns Collapsed (Walter Shenson)
As with A Hard Day’s Night, Lennon responded to the assignment by composing a title track that directly reflected the film’s identity. In later years, Lennon described ‘Help!’ as one of his most personal and honest songs.

Recording Sessions
The basic track was recorded in eight takes and featured:
- Drums (Ringo Starr)
- Bass guitar (Paul McCartney)
- Acoustic 12-string guitar (John Lennon)
- Electric guitar (George Harrison)
This was followed by four overdub sessions, which included Lennon’s double-tracked lead vocal and additional instrumental and vocal layering.
Overdubs and Arrangement
Paul McCartney and George Harrison contributed backing vocals and tambourine during overdubs. The final overdub was George Harrison’s descending guitar line, which appears at the end of each chorus and became one of the song’s defining sonic features.
