The Beatles live: Star-Club, Hamburg
Friday 13 April 1962 | Live Performance | Hamburg, Germany
On Friday 13 April 1962, The Beatles took to the stage at Hamburg's Star-Club for the very first time — and in doing so, opened the club itself on its inaugural night. It was the beginning of a 48-night residency that would total 172 hours of live performance and mark the final chapter of their Hamburg education.
Opening night: The Beatles launch the Star-Club
The Star-Club, located at Grosse Freiheit 39 just off the Reeperbahn, was Hamburg's newest and most ambitious rock 'n' roll venue. Owned by Manfred Weissleder, it had a capacity of approximately 2,000 — significantly larger than any venue The Beatles had previously played in the city. Weissleder had recruited top international acts to establish the club as the premier destination for rock 'n' roll in northern Europe, and The Beatles were his opening night headliners.
That The Beatles were chosen to open the Star-Club was a mark of how highly regarded they had become on the Hamburg circuit. They had first arrived in the city in August 1960, playing the Indra and Kaiserkeller, and had returned in 1961 for a residency at the Top Ten Club. By April 1962, they were the most experienced live act on the Reeperbahn.
Two days after learning of Stuart Sutcliffe's death
The opening night of the Star-Club came just two days after one of the most devastating moments in The Beatles' personal history. On 11 April 1962, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Pete Best had arrived at Hamburg Airport to be met by Astrid Kirchherr with the news that their former bandmate and close friend Stuart Sutcliffe had died the previous day — 10 April 1962 — from a brain haemorrhage, aged just 21.
Sutcliffe had left The Beatles in 1961 to study art in Hamburg and live with Astrid. He had been the band's original bassist and John Lennon's closest friend. The group had two days to absorb the news before they were required to open the Star-Club on 13 April. That they did so — and performed night after night for the next seven weeks — speaks to both their professionalism and the relentless demands of the Hamburg circuit.
On the cusp of everything
The spring of 1962 was a pivotal moment in Beatles history. Brian Epstein had been managing the group since December 1961 and was actively pursuing a record deal. In early May 1962 — while the residency was still ongoing — he would confirm a deal with EMI's Parlophone label, negotiated with producer George Martin. The Beatles' first EMI session was booked for 6 June 1962 at Abbey Road Studios — just days after the residency ended.
Within months of this opening night, Pete Best would be replaced by Ringo Starr, Love Me Do would be released, and Beatlemania would begin. The Star-Club's opening night on 13 April 1962 was, in retrospect, the last night of one era and the first of another.
Residency Context
The first Star-Club residency ran from 13 April to 31 May 1962 — 48 nights with only one scheduled break (Good Friday, 20 April). The Beatles left Hamburg on 2 June 1962. This was their third Hamburg club residency, following the Indra and Kaiserkeller in 1960 and the Top Ten Club in 1961.
