Stuart Sutcliffe Dies in Hamburg – 10 April 1962
Tuesday 10 April 1962 | People, The Beatles
On 10 April 1962, Stuart Sutcliffe, the original bassist of The Beatles and a gifted young artist, died in Hamburg, Germany, at the age of just 21.
Sutcliffe had been living in Hamburg with his fiancée, photographer Astrid Kirchherr, after leaving The Beatles in 1961 to pursue a career in art.
Declining Health in Hamburg
In the months leading up to his death, Sutcliffe had been suffering from increasingly severe headaches, blackouts, and periods of temporary blindness. Despite medical consultations, no definitive diagnosis was made.
His condition worsened throughout early 1962, with symptoms escalating to violent episodes and extreme mood swings. By late March, he was largely confined to bed.
Final Hours
On 10 April 1962, Astrid Kirchherr received a call that Sutcliffe had collapsed again and was being taken to hospital. She rushed to be with him and accompanied him in the ambulance.
Sutcliffe was already unconscious and tragically died in Kirchherr’s arms on the way to hospital.
The official cause of death was recorded as cerebral paralysis caused by a brain haemorrhage.
Uncertain Cause
The precise cause of Sutcliffe’s condition has never been conclusively determined. While some theories suggested a prior head injury, medical opinion has generally leaned towards a congenital issue such as an aneurysm or arteriovenous malformation (AVM).
Legacy
Although his time with The Beatles was brief, Stuart Sutcliffe played a key role in the band’s formative Hamburg years and was a central figure in their early identity. He later devoted himself fully to painting, where he showed significant promise as an emerging artist.
