Ringo Starr Postpones US Tour Dates – 10 June 2022

Friday 10 June 2022 | News

On 10 June 2022, Ringo Starr announced the postponement of 12 remaining dates on his All-Starr Band’s North American tour, after two band members — Edgar Winter and Steve Lukather — tested positive for Covid-19. The rescheduled dates were added to a September 2022 leg of the tour. The announcement came almost halfway through a 22-show run that had originally been planned for 2020 before being delayed by the pandemic.

The Announcement

“Well we tried, things happen, I send you all peace and love and thank you to all the people who came to the shows peace and love everybody.”

— Ringo Starr, 10 June 2022

The official statement read:

“Today Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band – Steve Lukather, Colin Hay, Warren Ham, Gregg Bissonette, Hamish Stuart and Edgar Winter – announced that two members have tested positive for Covid. These shows were initially planned for 2020, and Ringo and the All Starr Band were eager to finally get back out on the road. Almost halfway through the 22 show run, on Tuesday June 7 Ringo let audiences know on the second of three sold out shows at New York’s Beacon Theater that Edgar Winter had Covid, but the All Starrs continued on. However today Steve Lukather has also tested positive for Covid, forcing the group to reschedule the remaining 12 dates, and adding them to the September tour.”

Ringo added:

“We are so sorry to let the fans down. It’s been wonderful to be back out on the road and we have been having such a great time playing for you all. But as we all know, Covid is still here and despite being careful these things happen. I want to thank the fans for their patience, I send you all peace and love, and we can’t wait to be back in the Fall.”

The 2022 All-Starr Band

The 2022 lineup was a new configuration of the All-Starr Band, bringing together several musicians who had not previously toured with Starr alongside returning veterans:

  • Ringo Starr — vocals, drums, percussion
  • Steve Lukather — vocals, guitar (Toto; returning from the 2014 and 2016 All-Starr Band tours)
  • Edgar Winter — vocals, keyboards, saxophone (Edgar Winter Group — ‘Frankenstein’, ‘Free Ride’; returning from the 2011 All-Starr Band tour)
  • Colin Hay — vocals, guitar. The Scottish-born Australian musician who had been the lead vocalist and primary songwriter of Men at Work, whose ‘Down Under’ (1981) and ‘Who Can It Be Now?’ (1981) had both reached number one in the US and Australia. Hay had pursued a substantial solo career since Men at Work’s dissolution and was making his All-Starr Band debut in 2022.
  • Hamish Stuart — vocals, guitar, bass. The Scottish musician who had been a founding member of the Average White Band — the Scottish funk and soul group whose ‘Pick Up the Pieces’ (1974) had reached number one in the US — and who had subsequently worked with Paul McCartney as a member of his touring band in the early 1990s.
  • Warren Ham — vocals, saxophone, harmonica, flute, percussion, keyboards (returning from the 2014 and 2016 All-Starr Band tours)
  • Gregg Bissonette — vocals, drums (returning from multiple previous All-Starr Band tours)

The Sequence of Events

The 2022 tour had opened on 27 May in Orillia, Ontario, Canada, and had been proceeding well when the Covid disruptions began. On 7 June — the second of three sold-out nights at the Beacon Theater in New York City — Starr informed the audience that Edgar Winter had tested positive for Covid. The remaining shows continued without Winter. On 10 June, Steve Lukather also tested positive, making it impossible to continue the tour with two key members absent, and the decision was taken to postpone the remaining 12 dates.

The postponed dates were rescheduled to September 2022 and added to an extended autumn leg of the tour. All tickets from the original dates were honoured for the rescheduled shows.

The Peace and Love Birthday Celebration

The announcement noted that, in the meantime, Ringo Starr’s annual Peace and Love birthday celebration would take place on 7 July 2022 — Starr’s 82nd birthday. The event, which Starr has organised annually since 2008, invites fans around the world to say, post, or think ‘Peace and Love’ at noon their local time, creating a rolling wave of goodwill that travels from Australia, New Zealand, and Asia westward to Hawaii. The 2022 celebration was described as an opportunity for fans to connect while the tour was on pause.
