Ringo Starr to get Hollywood Walk of Fame star: 18 June 2009

Thursday 18 June 2009 | Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA

On 18 June 2009, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced that Ringo Starr would receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2010. Starr was one of 28 names chosen from more than 200 nominations to receive stars that year.

Starr responded to the announcement with characteristic brevity:

"A star for a Starr – what an honor and a privilege it is to be walked on! Peace & Love."

— Ringo Starr

His star was unveiled in a ceremony on 8 February 2010.

The 2010 Walk of Fame Class

Starr's was one of 28 stars announced for 2010. Other recipients in the same class included Russell Crowe, Randy Newman, Adam Sandler, Van Morrison, Andrea Bocelli, and the late Roy Orbison — a posthumous honour for the Big O, who had died in December 1988.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame has five categories of star: motion pictures, television, recording, radio, and live theatre/performance. Starr's star was in the recording category.

George Harrison's Star

Ringo Starr's announcement came just weeks after a significant Beatles-related moment on the Walk of Fame. In April 2009, Sir Paul McCartney had unveiled a posthumous star for George Harrison outside the Capitol Records building on Hollywood Boulevard — a location chosen for its obvious resonance with Harrison's recording career. Harrison had died in November 2001.

With Harrison's star in place and Starr's announced, the Walk of Fame's Beatles representation was becoming substantial. John Lennon had received a star in 1988, and Paul McCartney in 1990. The four Beatles now all have stars on the Walk of Fame — though Lennon's and McCartney's were awarded as individuals, while Harrison's and Starr's came later.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Walk of Fame runs along Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street in Hollywood, Los Angeles. It was established in 1958 and the first stars were installed in 1960. By 2009 it contained more than 2,400 stars. The Walk is maintained by the Hollywood Historic Trust and managed by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which selects recipients from public nominations each year.

A star on the Walk of Fame is not simply awarded — it requires a nomination, a selection process, and the agreement of the recipient (or their estate, in the case of posthumous honours). There is also a sponsorship fee, paid by the recipient's record label, studio, or other sponsor, to cover the cost of the star's installation and maintenance.
