Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band Live at Westbury Music Fair, Jericho – 16 May 2000

Tuesday 16 May 2000 | Live, Ringo Starr
Westbury Music Fair, Jericho, New York, USA

On 16 May 2000, Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band performed at the Westbury Music Fair in Jericho, New York — the fourth show of a 32-date North American tour and the first of two consecutive nights at the venue. The sixth All-Starr Band featured Dave Edmunds, Jack Bruce, Eric Carmen, Mark Rivera, and Simon Kirke. Starr had previously played the Westbury Music Fair in February 1999 and would return there in 2003, 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2014.

The Sixth All-Starr Band

The sixth All-Starr Band brought together a remarkable cross-section of British and American rock history:

  • Ringo Starr — vocals, drums, percussion
  • Dave Edmunds — vocals, guitar (Rockpile; solo artist; 'I Hear You Knocking')
  • Jack Bruce — vocals, bass guitar, keyboards (Cream)
  • Eric Carmen — vocals, keyboards, guitar, bass guitar (Raspberries; 'All By Myself')
  • Mark Rivera — vocals, saxophone, guitar, organ, keyboards, percussion, harmonica
  • Simon Kirke — vocals, drums (Free; Bad Company)

Jack Bruce and Simon Kirke were returning All-Starr veterans, having both appeared in the fourth edition in 1997. Dave Edmunds — the Welsh guitarist and producer whose 1970 recording of 'I Hear You Knocking' had been a transatlantic number one — and Eric Carmen — whose 'All By Myself' (1975) and 'Hungry Eyes' (1987) had made him one of the most recognisable voices in American soft rock — were new additions.

The Westbury Music Fair

The Westbury Music Fair was a theatre-in-the-round venue in Jericho, on Long Island, New York — one of the most distinctive concert venues on the US east coast. Its circular stage, surrounded by the audience on all sides, created an intimate atmosphere unusual for a venue of its size. It hosted major acts from the 1950s through to its closure in 2012, when it was redeveloped. Ringo Starr performed there on at least eight occasions between 1999 and 2014, making it one of the venues most closely associated with the All-Starr Band's east coast touring history.

The Setlist

The 22-song set balanced Starr's Beatles and solo catalogue with showcase spots for each All-Starr member:

  1. 'It Don't Come Easy' (Ringo Starr)
  2. 'Act Naturally' (Ringo Starr)
  3. 'Hungry Eyes' (Eric Carmen)
  4. 'I Hear You Knocking' (Dave Edmunds)
  5. 'Sunshine of Your Love' (Jack Bruce / Cream)
  6. 'Shooting Star' (Simon Kirke / Bad Company)
  7. 'I Wanna Be Your Man' (Ringo Starr)
  8. 'Love Me Do' (Ringo Starr)
  9. 'Yellow Submarine' (Ringo Starr)
  10. 'Go All the Way' (Eric Carmen / Raspberries)
  11. 'I'm the Greatest' (Ringo Starr)
  12. 'No No Song' (Ringo Starr)
  13. 'Back Off Boogaloo' (Ringo Starr)
  14. 'I Feel Free' (Jack Bruce / Cream)
  15. 'All Right Now' (Simon Kirke / Free)
  16. 'Boys' (Ringo Starr)
  17. 'I Knew the Bride (When She Used to Rock 'n' Roll)' (Dave Edmunds)
  18. 'White Room' (Jack Bruce / Cream)
  19. 'All By Myself' (Eric Carmen)
  20. 'Photograph' (Ringo Starr)
  21. 'You're Sixteen' (Ringo Starr)
  22. 'With a Little Help from My Friends' (Ringo Starr)

Jack Bruce performed three Cream classics — 'Sunshine of Your Love', 'I Feel Free', and 'White Room' — as he had in 1997. Eric Carmen's 'All By Myself' — built on Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 — was one of the more unexpected moments in any All-Starr set. Dave Edmunds' 'I Knew the Bride' gave the show a rockabilly energy, while 'Love Me Do' — The Beatles' debut single — appeared in the set alongside 'I Wanna Be Your Man' and 'Yellow Submarine'.
