From Osaka and Nagoya to Fukuoka
The Japanese run opened at the Orix Theater in Osaka on 24 October, followed by Nagoya’s Aichi Geijutsu Bunka Senta on 25 October. Fukuoka was next, before Hiroshima and four Tokyo performances.
The Japanese tour announcement from Universal Music identifies the Fukuoka Sunpalace Hotel & Hall engagement and the seven musicians announced for the visit. Steve Lukather’s tour archive also lists Fukuoka on 27 October as Sun Palace Hall.
Japan came after the autumn North American concerts, with the band moving from California to Osaka. After the Japanese dates, the schedule continued to Seoul, Honolulu and a final mainland US run, ending in San Rafael on 19 November.
The All-Starr musicians in Japan
The Japanese touring lineup comprised Ringo Starr, Steve Lukather, Todd Rundgren, Gregg Rolie, Richard Page, Gregg Bissonette and Warren Ham. The shared lead vocals gave the All-Starr programme its variety, while Ringo’s songs returned throughout the evening.
| Musician | Role and featured songs |
|---|---|
| Ringo Starr | Vocals and drums, leading the Beatles and solo selections |
| Steve Lukather | Guitar and vocals; Rosanna, Africa and Hold the Line |
| Gregg Rolie | Organ, keyboards and vocals; Evil Ways, Black Magic Woman, Gypsy Queen and Oye Cómo Va |
| Todd Rundgren | Guitar, vocals and additional instruments; I Saw the Light, Bang the Drum All Day and Love Is the Answer |
| Richard Page | Bass and vocals; Kyrie, You Are Mine and Broken Wings |
| Warren Ham | Saxophone, percussion, keyboards and vocals |
| Gregg Bissonette | Drums and vocal support |
The songs led by Lukather and Rolie connect the All-Starr show with their wider careers. Explore Toto merchandise at Wonderhaul for the band behind Rosanna, Africa and Hold the Line, or the Santana collection for the musical legacy represented by Rolie’s featured songs. Rolie also helped found Journey; our sister store’s Journey collection offers a separate route into that part of his career, rather than the repertoire he sang here.
Beatles favourites and Back Off Boogaloo
Matchbox and It Don’t Come Easy opened the set before What Goes On. Later Ringo-led Beatles selections included Boys, Don’t Pass Me By, Yellow Submarine, I Wanna Be Your Man and Act Naturally.
Back Off Boogaloo appeared alongside You’re Sixteen and Photograph among the solo favourites. Compare the repertoire with Pittsburgh on the same date in 2015, when Island in the Sun and I’m the Greatest occupied places in the programme.
The other featured singers supplied further contrasts, from I Saw the Light and Kyrie to Africa and Broken Wings. Ringo’s return to the microphone between those performances kept the show moving between his own history and the repertoire of his fellow musicians.
