Saturday 18 June 2016 | Live | Ryman Auditorium, Nashville, Tennessee, USA
Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band performed at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee on 18 June 2016. It was the 12th show of the 12th All-Starr Band's 42-date North America and Asia tour (June–November 2016), and the first of two consecutive nights at the Ryman.
Starr had previously performed at the Ryman Auditorium on 7 July 2012. He returned there on 7 and 8 August 2019, 24 September 2023, and 14 and 15 January 2025.
The HB2 Protest
The Nashville show was a late schedule engagement — added to the tour after Starr cancelled a previously scheduled concert on the same date at the Koka Booth Amphitheatre in Cary, North Carolina. The cancellation was made in protest over North Carolina's HB2 law, the so-called ‘bathroom bill’ passed in March 2016, which restricted transgender people's access to bathrooms in public buildings and removed local anti-discrimination protections for LGBT people.
Starr was among a number of artists who cancelled or relocated shows in North Carolina in 2016 in response to HB2, joining Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, and others who took a public stand against the legislation. His statement at the time was direct: he would not perform in a state that had passed such a law. The Nashville shows were the replacement engagement.
The Ryman Auditorium
The Ryman Auditorium on Fifth Avenue North in downtown Nashville is one of the most celebrated concert venues in the United States. Built in 1892 as the Union Gospel Tabernacle, it became the home of the Grand Ole Opry from 1943 to 1974 and is widely known as the ‘Mother Church of Country Music’. Its acoustics are exceptional, its history is extraordinary, and performing there carries a weight that few venues in the world can match.
For Ringo Starr — who had spent his 32nd birthday in Nashville in 1974, recording with Wings, and who had received Bill Black's bass as a birthday gift that year — the Ryman was a venue with particular resonance. Nashville had been part of his story for decades.
