A familiar theatre, a different All-Starr chapter

The State Theatre was already part of Ringo’s touring history. He had appeared there in 2000 and returned on 5 July 2010. The 2015 concert added another chapter to that relationship, this time with the musicians associated with the 12th All-Starr Band.

The All-Starr idea is deliberately different from a conventional solo concert. Ringo is the host and the central link, but his colleagues also take turns leading songs from their own careers. The result moves between Beatles history, Ringo’s independent recordings and several strands of American rock and pop.

The 2015 All-Starr Band

  • Ringo Starr: vocals, drums and percussion.
  • Steve Lukather: guitar and vocals, bringing songs associated with Toto.
  • Gregg Rolie: keyboards, organ and vocals, bringing material associated with Santana.
  • Todd Rundgren: vocals, guitar and other instruments, including songs from his solo and Utopia catalogues.
  • Richard Page: bass, vocals and acoustic guitar, including Mr. Mister favourites.
  • Warren Ham: saxophone, keyboards and vocals.
  • Gregg Bissonette: drums, percussion and vocals.

Lukather’s guitar, Rolie’s organ, Page’s bass and vocals, and Rundgren’s contrasting material gave the set its variety. Ham added instrumental and vocal support, while Bissonette helped anchor the rhythm section alongside Ringo. The shared-drummer arrangement allowed Starr to move between playing behind the band and singing at the front of the stage.

Beatles songs and Ringo’s solo identity

“Matchbox” opened the documented set, followed by “It Don’t Come Easy” and “Island in the Sun”. That opening quickly established both sides of the evening: the singer familiar from the Beatles and the artist who continued recording and touring long after the group ended.

The Beatles selections included “Boys”, “Don’t Pass Me By”, “Yellow Submarine”, “I Wanna Be Your Man” and “Act Naturally”. These songs carried different aspects of Ringo’s musical identity, from early rock and roll and country influences to the unmistakable communal chorus of “Yellow Submarine”.

His solo career was represented by “Photograph”, “You’re Sixteen”, “I’m the Greatest” and “It Don’t Come Easy”. “Island in the Sun” provided a contemporary connection to Postcards From Paradise, released on 31 March 2015.

Hits shared across the band

The other All-Starrs were integral to the programme rather than simply accompanying Ringo. Lukather led “Rosanna”, “Africa” and “Hold the Line”, while Page brought “Kyrie”, “Broken Wings” and “You Are Mine”. Rolie’s selections included “Evil Ways”, “Black Magic Woman”, “Gypsy Queen” and “Oye Cómo Va”. Rundgren contributed “I Saw the Light”, “Bang the Drum All Day” and “Love Is the Answer”.

That exchange of lead roles is what gives an All-Starr show its distinctive shape. Familiar Ringo songs sit beside music with different rhythms, vocal textures and guitar or keyboard sounds. The common thread is the band itself, supporting each musician in turn.
