On Wednesday 5 July 1995, Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band performed at the Ravinia Festival, held at The Pavilion in Highland Park, Illinois, USA. It was the 15th show by the third All-Starr Band, whose tour of Japan and North America ran for 50 dates between June and August 1995.
The third All-Starr Band
The lineup for the 1995 tour was one of the most musically distinguished in the All-Starr Band's history:
- Ringo Starr — vocals, drums, percussion, piano
- Randy Bachman — vocals, guitar
- Mark Farner — vocals, guitar, harmonica
- Billy Preston — vocals, keyboards
- Felix Cavaliere — vocals, organ, keyboard, maracas
- John Entwistle — vocals, bass guitar
- Mark Rivera — vocals, saxophone, percussion, tambourine, cowbell, guitar
- Zak Starkey — drums
Billy Preston — born in Houston, Texas on 9 September 1946 — had one of the most significant connections to The Beatles of any musician outside the group. He had first met them in Hamburg in 1962 when touring with Little Richard. In January 1969 he joined the Get Back sessions at Apple Corps, his presence credited with easing the tensions within the group. He played keyboards on 'Get Back', 'Don't Let Me Down', and other tracks from the sessions, and was the only musician ever to receive a co-credit on a Beatles single — 'Get Back' was released as 'The Beatles with Billy Preston'. He died on 6 June 2006.
John Entwistle — born in Chiswick, London on 9 October 1944 — was the bass guitarist and occasional vocalist of The Who, known as 'The Ox' for his thunderous playing style. He wrote 'Boris The Spider' and 'My Wife', both of which featured in the All-Starr setlist. Entwistle died on 27 June 2002 in Las Vegas, the night before The Who were due to begin a North American tour.
Randy Bachman — born in Winnipeg, Canada on 27 September 1943 — was the guitarist and co-founder of The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO). The Guess Who had supported The Beatles on their 1964 North American tour as The Reflections. His BTO hit 'You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet' and The Guess Who's 'No Sugar Tonight' both featured in the setlist.
Mark Farner — born in Flint, Michigan on 29 September 1948 — was the vocalist and guitarist of Grand Funk Railroad, one of the most commercially successful American hard rock bands of the early 1970s. 'The Loco-Motion' and 'I'm Your Captain (Closer To Home)' were among his contributions to the setlist.
Felix Cavaliere — born in Pelham, New York on 29 November 1942 — was the vocalist and organist of The Rascals (later the Young Rascals), who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. 'People Got To Be Free', 'Groovin'', and 'Good Lovin'' were among his songs in the set.
Zak Starkey — born in London on 13 September 1965, the son of Ringo Starr — had been taught to play drums by Keith Moon of The Who. He joined The Who as their touring drummer in 1996 and later played with Oasis. His presence in the All-Starr Band gave the rhythm section an unusual father-and-son dynamic.
Mark Rivera was a multi-instrumentalist best known as a long-standing member of Billy Joel's band.
