Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band live: King Center, Melbourne – 9 July 2006

On Sunday 9 July 2006, Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band performed at the Maxwell C King Center for the Performing Arts in Melbourne, Florida. It was the 17th show of the ninth All-Starr Band's 25-date North American tour, which ran through June and July 2006. Starr returned to the King Center on 22 October 2014.

The Ninth All-Starr Band

  • Ringo Starr – vocals, drums, percussion
  • Billy Squier – vocals, guitar
  • Richard Marx – vocals, guitar, keyboards
  • Edgar Winter – vocals, keyboards, saxophone
  • Rod Argent – vocals, organ, keyboards (The Zombies)
  • Hamish Stuart – vocals, bass guitar (Average White Band; Paul McCartney's World Tour band)
  • Sheila E – vocals, drums, percussion

Rod Argent was the keyboard player and songwriter behind The Zombies – the British Invasion band whose 'She's Not There' (1964) and 'Time of the Season' (1968) had made them one of the most distinctive acts of the era. Hamish Stuart, the Average White Band guitarist and vocalist, had also been a member of Paul McCartney's touring band for the 1989–90 World Tour. Edgar Winter, the albino multi-instrumentalist, was best known for 'Frankenstein' – the instrumental that became one of the defining rock tracks of the early 1970s. Sheila E, the percussionist and vocalist who had worked closely with Prince, brought a different energy to the band's rhythm section.

The Setlist

Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band performed 22 songs at the King Center on 9 July 2006. Songs performed by guest members are noted in brackets:

  1. 'It Don't Come Easy'
  2. 'What Goes On'
  3. 'Honey Don't'
  4. 'Everybody Wants You' (Billy Squier)
  5. 'Free Ride' (Edgar Winter)
  6. 'A Love Bizarre' (Sheila E)
  7. 'Boys'
  8. 'Don't Mean Nothing' (Richard Marx)
  9. 'She's Not There' (Rod Argent)
  10. 'Never Without You'
  11. 'Yellow Submarine'
  12. 'Frankenstein' (Edgar Winter)
  13. 'Photograph'
  14. 'Choose Love'
  15. 'Should've Known Better' (Richard Marx)
  16. 'The Glamorous Life' (Sheila E)
  17. 'I Wanna Be Your Man'
  18. 'Rock Me Tonite' (Billy Squier)
  19. 'Hold Your Head Up' (Rod Argent)
  20. 'Act Naturally'
  21. 'Memphis In Your Mind'
  22. 'With A Little Help From My Friends'

Edgar Winter's two showcase moments – 'Free Ride' and 'Frankenstein' – were among the most musically ambitious in the set. 'Frankenstein', the extended instrumental from Winter's 1973 album They Only Come Out at Night, gave the band's musicians room to stretch out in a way that the more song-focused numbers did not. Rod Argent's 'She's Not There' – the Zombies' 1964 debut single, with its distinctive minor-key organ riff – was a reminder of how deep the British Invasion ran, and how many of its key figures were still performing at the highest level four decades later.

'Never Without You' was Ringo's tribute to George Harrison, written after Harrison's death in November 2001. 'Choose Love' and 'Memphis In Your Mind' were from Ringo's 2005 album Choose Love. The set closed, as always, with 'With A Little Help From My Friends'.
