Ringo Starr has always been underestimated. As The Beatles' drummer he was dismissed by some as the least talented of the four ā a view that professional musicians have consistently rejected, pointing to his impeccable feel, his inventive fills, and his ability to serve the song above all else. After The Beatles broke up, Ringo proved the doubters wrong in his own characteristically good-humoured way: by having a string of solo hits, building one of rock's most enduring touring institutions, pursuing a surprisingly substantial acting career, and becoming the world's most enthusiastic ambassador for peace and love.
The Solo Years: Hits Nobody Expected
Ringo's early solo output was, against all expectations, commercially successful. His 1973 album Ringo ā produced by Richard Perry and featuring contributions from all three other ex-Beatles, the only post-breakup album to achieve this ā produced two US number one singles: "Photograph" (co-written with George Harrison) and "You're Sixteen". A third single, "Oh My My", reached number five.
For a brief moment in 1973, Ringo Starr was the most commercially successful ex-Beatle in America. Nobody had seen that coming.
Further albums followed through the 1970s and beyond, including Goodnight Vienna (1974), Ringo's Rotogravure (1976), and a string of later records that kept him connected to his musical roots. His 2026 album Long Long Road, recorded with Paul McCartney, demonstrated that at 85 he remained creatively vital.
The Acting Career
Of all the Beatles, Ringo had the most natural screen presence ā a quality Richard Lester had spotted immediately when casting A Hard Day's Night in 1964. After The Beatles, he pursued acting with genuine commitment and considerable success.
His most celebrated film role came in The Magic Christian (1969), alongside Peter Sellers, in which he played Youngman Grand ā a performance that demonstrated real comic timing and charm. He followed it with roles in Blindman (1971), Frank Zappa's 200 Motels (1971), and That'll Be the Day (1973), in which he played a Teddy Boy alongside David Essex.
His most unlikely and beloved role came in 1981: Caveman, a prehistoric comedy in which Ringo starred alongside Barbara Bach ā whom he met on set and married that same year. The film was a modest hit and remains a cult favourite.
But the role that introduced Ringo to an entirely new generation was as the narrator of Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends, which he voiced from 1984 to 1986. His warm, unhurried delivery made him the perfect storyteller for the series, and his association with Thomas remains one of the most charming footnotes in Beatles history.

The All-Starr Band
In 1989, Ringo formed Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band ā a rotating supergroup concept in which Ringo tours with a changing lineup of rock legends, each of whom performs their own hits alongside Ringo's. Past All-Starrs have included Joe Walsh, Todd Rundgren, Nils Lofgren, Billy Preston, Peter Frampton, Sheila E., and dozens of others.
The All-Starr Band has now been touring for over 35 years, making it one of the longest-running touring institutions in rock music. Ringo's energy and enthusiasm on stage ā still drumming, still grinning, still shouting "Peace and love!" at every opportunity ā has made him one of the most beloved live performers of his generation.
Peace & Love
Since 1997, Ringo has marked his birthday ā 7th July ā with a global "Peace & Love" moment, asking fans around the world to say "peace and love" at noon their local time. It is the most Ringo thing imaginable: simple, sincere, slightly eccentric, and entirely genuine. He ends every interview, every concert, every public appearance with the same two words.
He means it. He has always meant it.
