Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band live: Nautica Stage, Cleveland – 9 July 1995

On Sunday 9 July 1995, Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band performed at the Nautica Stage in Cleveland, Ohio. It was the 17th show of the third All-Starr Band's 50-date tour of Japan and North America, which ran from June to August 1995. Starr would return to the Nautica Stage on 20 July 2010 and 29 June 2014.

The Third All-Starr Band

  • Ringo Starr – vocals, drums, percussion, piano
  • Randy Bachman – vocals, guitar (Bachman-Turner Overdrive, The Guess Who)
  • Mark Farner – vocals, guitar, harmonica (Grand Funk Railroad)
  • Billy Preston – vocals, keyboards (solo artist, Beatles collaborator)
  • Felix Cavaliere – vocals, organ, keyboard, maracas (The Rascals)
  • John Entwistle – vocals, bass guitar (The Who)
  • Mark Rivera – vocals, saxophone, percussion, tambourine, cowbell, guitar
  • Zak Starkey – drums (Ringo's son)

The 1995 lineup was one of the most celebrated in All-Starr Band history. John Entwistle – the Who's bass guitarist, widely regarded as one of the greatest rock bassists of all time – brought an extraordinary musical pedigree to the band. Billy Preston had a unique connection to The Beatles: he had played keyboards on the Let It Be sessions in January 1969 and was the only musician ever to receive a co-credit on a Beatles single ('Get Back'). Felix Cavaliere's Rascals had been one of the defining American bands of the 1960s. Randy Bachman had written and recorded some of the most enduring rock anthems of the 1970s with Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Zak Starkey – Ringo's son, who would later become the drummer for The Who – played alongside his father.

The Setlist

Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band performed 24 songs at the Nautica Stage on 9 July 1995. Songs performed by guest members are noted in brackets:

  1. 'Don't Go Where The Road Don't Go'
  2. 'I Wanna Be Your Man'
  3. 'It Don't Come Easy'
  4. 'The Loco-Motion' (Mark Farner)
  5. 'Nothing From Nothing' (Billy Preston)
  6. 'No Sugar Tonight' (Randy Bachman)
  7. 'People Got To Be Free' (Felix Cavaliere)
  8. 'Boris The Spider' (John Entwistle)
  9. 'Boys'
  10. 'You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet' (Randy Bachman)
  11. 'You're Sixteen'
  12. 'Yellow Submarine'
  13. 'My Wife' (John Entwistle)
  14. 'I'm Your Captain (Closer To Home)' (Mark Farner)
  15. 'Honey Don't'
  16. 'Act Naturally'
  17. 'Groovin’' (Felix Cavaliere)
  18. 'Will It Go Round In Circles' (Billy Preston)
  19. 'Takin' Care Of Business' (Randy Bachman)
  20. 'Some Kind Of Wonderful' (Mark Farner)
  21. 'Good Lovin’' (Felix Cavaliere)
  22. 'Photograph'
  23. 'No No Song'
  24. 'With A Little Help From My Friends'

John Entwistle's showcase moments were two of the most distinctive in the set: 'Boris The Spider', the darkly comic Who track he had written himself, and 'My Wife', another Entwistle composition from Who's Next. Both songs gave the Nautica Stage audience a rare chance to see Entwistle as a frontman rather than the famously still presence he cut as the Who's bassist.

Billy Preston's 'Nothing From Nothing' and 'Will It Go Round In Circles' were two of his biggest solo hits. His presence in the All-Starr Band carried particular resonance given his history with The Beatles – he had been in the room at Apple Corps in January 1969 when the Let It Be sessions were at their most fractious, and his arrival had, by most accounts, temporarily improved the atmosphere.

The set closed, as All-Starr Band sets invariably did, with 'With A Little Help From My Friends' – the song Ringo had sung on Sgt. Pepper's in 1967 and which had become his signature.
