Paul McCartney live: Times Union Center, Albany — 5 July 2014

On Saturday 5 July 2014, Paul McCartney performed at the Times Union Center in Albany, New York, USA. It was the 39th show of the Out There Tour, which ran for 91 dates between May 2013 and October 2015. The concert was attended by 13,044 fans.

The return from illness

The Albany show marked McCartney's return to the stage after a serious illness had forced him to cancel a significant portion of the tour. He had been struck down by a virus during the Japan leg of the tour in May 2014, spending six days in a Tokyo hospital before recuperating in London. The cancelled dates included the remainder of the Japan leg, a show in South Korea, and seven US dates.

Albany was the first rescheduled US date, and the show carried particular significance as McCartney's first performance in nearly two months. The Times Union Center also saw a new addition to the setlist: 'On My Way To Work', from the 2013 album New.

The on-stage marriage proposal

The Albany show is remembered for an on-stage marriage proposal during the second encore. A couple from Rochester had been holding aloft banners reading "He won't marry me 'til he meets you!" and "I have the ring & I'm 64!!" McCartney spotted them and invited them onto the stage.

John Dann sang part of The Beatles' 'When I'm Sixty-Four' to his girlfriend Claudia Rodgers before getting down on one knee and proposing marriage. She accepted to cheers from the crowd of 13,044.

The Out There Tour

The Out There Tour was one of the most extensive tours of McCartney's solo career, running for 91 dates across five continents between May 2013 and October 2015. It promoted the New album (released October 2013) and took in Brazil, the USA, Europe, Japan, South Korea, and Australia. The tour grossed over $184 million and was seen by more than 2.3 million fans worldwide.

The 14 August 2014 show at Candlestick Park in San Francisco was the final concert ever held at the stadium, which was demolished in 2015. It was also a historically resonant date: Candlestick Park had been the venue for The Beatles' final concert on 29 August 1966.
