The deal never came to fruition. The Harrisons flew on to Los Angeles on 1 August 1967.

The Greek Island Plan

The idea of The Beatles purchasing a private Greek island had emerged in the summer of 1967, during the height of the band’s psychedelic period and in the immediate aftermath of the death of their manager Brian Epstein — though Epstein was still alive at this point; he would die on 27 August 1967, less than a month after Harrison’s return from Greece.

The island plan was part of a broader utopian impulse that characterised The Beatles’ thinking in the summer of 1967. The band had been exploring ideas about communal living, Eastern philosophy, and withdrawal from the pressures of public life. A private island in the Aegean offered the fantasy of a self-contained world — a place where the four Beatles, their families, and their inner circle could live and work away from the demands of fame.

All four Beatles had visited Greece earlier in July 1967 to scout the island. The trip had been organised with characteristic Beatles extravagance: the group chartered a yacht and sailed around the Greek islands, eventually identifying a small island they wished to buy. Greek law at the time restricted foreign ownership of land, but the group’s advisers believed a way around the restrictions could be found.

It could not. The deal never progressed beyond the exploratory stage, and the island was never purchased. George Harrison’s return to England on 29 July — ahead of the rest of the group — was part of the winding down of the Greek adventure.

Mal Evans

Mal Evans was one of the most important figures in The Beatles’ inner circle — a former bouncer at the Cavern Club who had become the band’s personal assistant, road manager, and general factotum from 1963 onwards. Gentle, loyal, and devoted to the group, Evans was present at many of the most significant moments in Beatles history, including the recording of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band earlier in 1967 — he played the alarm clock on ‘A Day in the Life’ and the anvil on ‘Maxwell’s Silver Hammer’.

Evans’ presence on the Greek trip was typical of his role: wherever The Beatles went, Mal went too. He was killed by Los Angeles police in January 1976 after brandishing an air rifle during a mental health crisis.
