Geoff Britton Joins Wings – 16 May 1974
Thursday 16 May 1974 | Paul McCartney, Wings
On 16 May 1974, Paul McCartney telephoned Geoff Britton to offer him the position of drummer in Wings. Britton had been chosen from an initial field of 52 drummers across two days of auditions, then a shortlist of five, then a final head-to-head with Rob Townsend — a process that had taken nearly three weeks. His appointment completed the lineup of Wings mark II, the group that would go on to record Venus and Mars and undertake the Wings Over the World Tour.
The Audition Process
The search for a new Wings drummer had begun in earnest in late April 1974. Henry McCullough and Denny Seiwell had both left the group abruptly in August 1973, just days before McCartney, Linda, and Denny Laine flew to Lagos to record Band on the Run without them. The album had been a critical and commercial triumph — reaching number one in both the UK and the US — but Wings remained a trio, and McCartney needed to rebuild the group for live work.
The first round of auditions took place on 29 and 30 April 1974, with 52 drummers trying out over two days. From that field, five were selected for a second round of auditions on 8 and 9 May. The final two candidates were Geoff Britton and Rob Townsend — the latter best known as the drummer with Family, the progressive rock group who had disbanded in 1973.
The Electric Ballroom Session
To make the final decision, Britton was invited to play with Wings at the Electric Ballroom on Camden High Street in London on 13 May 1974. The session gave McCartney the chance to assess not just Britton's technical ability but his feel within the group — how he locked in with Laine, how he responded to McCartney's direction, and whether his personality fitted the band.
Evidently satisfied on all counts, McCartney made the call three days later. On 16 May 1974, Britton was told he had the job.
Geoff Britton
Geoff Britton was a London-born drummer with a background in rock and a parallel career as a karate champion — he held a black belt and had competed at national level. He had played with East of Eden and other British rock acts before the Wings audition. His powerful, straightforward style was a contrast to the more jazz-influenced approach of Denny Seiwell, and suited the harder-edged direction McCartney was exploring in 1974.
Britton's tenure with Wings was relatively brief. He recorded the drum tracks for Venus and Mars in New Orleans in late 1974, but left the group in January 1975 before the album was completed, citing personal and musical differences. He was replaced by Joe English, who played on the finished album and the subsequent Wings Over the World Tour.
Wings Mark II
With Britton confirmed, the Wings mark II lineup was complete: Paul McCartney, Linda McCartney, Denny Laine, Jimmy McCulloch (who had joined as guitarist in May 1974), and Geoff Britton. It was the first time since the departure of McCullough and Seiwell in August 1973 that Wings had a full five-piece lineup.
Jimmy McCulloch — a Scottish guitarist who had previously played with Thunderclap Newman and Stone the Crows — had been recruited around the same time as Britton, completing a rebuild that had taken the best part of a year following the Lagos crisis. The new lineup would rehearse through the summer of 1974 before beginning work on Venus and Mars in November.
