Filming: A Hard Day's Night
Date: Thursday 16 April 1964
Locations: Notting Hill, London, England
Production: A Hard Day's Night
Overview
On 16 April 1964, The Beatles filmed the outdoor chase scenes for their first feature film, A Hard Day's Night, in various locations around Notting Hill in London.
These sequences would become some of the most recognisable moments in the film, capturing the band's humour, energy, and playful on-screen persona.
Filming Locations
The main filming took place outside St John's (Church of England) Secondary School, located at 83 Clarendon Road. The school has since been demolished and replaced by housing.
Additional scenes were shot in nearby streets, including Heathfield Street, where The Beatles were filmed running into a cul-de-sac before turning back.
Notable Scenes
The Heathfield Street sequence — featuring the band reaching a dead end — became one of the film's most memorable visual moments. A still from this scene was later used on the cover artwork for The Beatles: Rock Band.
An additional scene was filmed outside the Portland Arms pub, showing The Beatles entering via Portland Road and exiting through Penzance Place. This sequence, however, was not included in the final cut of the film.
Production Context
Earlier filming on 7 April 1964 had taken place at Twickenham Film Studios, where interior police station scenes were shot.
The shift to location filming on 16 April added realism and dynamism to the film, helping define its semi-documentary style.
