Post-Sync Recording for Help! – 18 May 1965

Tuesday 18 May 1965 | Film and Video, Studio
Twickenham Film Studios, St Margaret's, Twickenham

On 18 May 1965, The Beatles returned to Twickenham Film Studios to record post-sync work for the audio track of Help! — one week after principal photography had concluded on 11 May. The group overdubbed speech onto various scenes in the film, ranging from full lines of dialogue to mumbled asides and laughter. A second day of post-sync work followed on 16 June 1965. In the evening, Paul McCartney and Jane Asher attended a performance by Gene Barry at the Talk of the Town nightclub in London.

Post-Sync Work for Help!

Principal photography on Help! had concluded on 11 May 1965, following location shoots in the Bahamas, the Austrian Alps, and at various London locations, as well as studio work at Twickenham. Post-sync — also known as ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement) — involves re-recording dialogue and other vocal contributions in a controlled studio environment to replace or supplement audio captured during filming.

The Beatles' contributions on 18 May ranged from full lines of dialogue to mumbled asides and laughter — the kind of incidental vocal texture that gives a film its sense of naturalism. Among the new recordings was an extract from I Sat Beloneyly, a piece from John Lennon's 1964 book In His Own Write, recorded during the scene in which Lennon and Ringo Starr walk to a post box. The inclusion of Lennon's literary work in the film was a small but characteristic touch — In His Own Write had been published in March 1964 and had been received as a genuine work of comic literature, drawing comparisons to Edward Lear and Lewis Carroll.

Help! – The Film

Help! was The Beatles' second feature film, directed by Richard Lester — who had also directed A Hard Day's Night (1964). Where A Hard Day's Night had been shot in black and white in a quasi-documentary style, Help! was a colour comedy adventure, shot on location across three continents. The plot — involving a sacrificial ring stuck on Ringo Starr's finger and a cult pursuing him across the world — was a vehicle for a series of comic set pieces and musical performances.

The film was released on 29 July 1965, with a royal world premiere at the London Pavilion attended by Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon. The accompanying soundtrack album, also titled Help!, was released on 6 August 1965 and included 'Yesterday', 'Ticket to Ride', and the title track.

In His Own Write

John Lennon's first book, In His Own Write, had been published by Jonathan Cape on 23 March 1964. A collection of short prose pieces, poems, and drawings in a surreal, punning style, it was received as a work of genuine literary merit. The Times Literary Supplement called it "worth the attention of anyone who fears for the impoverishment of the English language and the British imagination." I Sat Beloneyly — a parody of the word 'sat belonely' (sat alone) — was one of the pieces included in the book. Its use in Help! was one of several moments in the film that reflected Lennon's literary sensibility.

Paul McCartney and Jane Asher at the Talk of the Town

In the evening of 18 May 1965, Paul McCartney and his girlfriend Jane Asher attended a performance by American actor and singer Gene Barry at the Talk of the Town — a prestigious nightclub and cabaret venue in the Hippodrome building on Charing Cross Road, London. They spoke to Barry after the show and ended the night at Downstairs at the Pickwick, another London club.

McCartney and Asher had been together since late 1963. Asher — an actress from a distinguished London family — was one of the most significant relationships of McCartney's life during the Beatles years. McCartney lived at the Asher family home in Wimpole Street from late 1963 until 1966.
