Mixing: I've Just Seen A Face, I'm Down, It's Only Love, Act Naturally, Wait, Help!, Yesterday – 18 June 1965

Friday 18 June 1965 | Studio Two (control room), EMI Studios, Abbey Road, London, England

Producer: George Martin | Engineer: Norman Smith

Work on the Help! album concluded on 18 June 1965, with two mixing sessions in the control room of Studio Two at EMI Studios, Abbey Road. Mono and stereo mixes were prepared for the album and its associated single.

Session One: Mono Mixes (10am – 12.30pm)

The morning session ran from 10am to 12.30pm. Five mono mixes were created:

  • 'I've Just Seen A Face'
  • 'I'm Down'
  • 'It's Only Love'
  • 'Act Naturally'
  • 'Wait'

A mono mix of 'Yesterday' had already been prepared on the previous day, 17 June 1965, so it did not require attention in the morning session.

Session Two: Stereo Mixes (12.30pm – 1.30pm)

The afternoon session ran from 12.30pm to 1.30pm — a single hour in which stereo mixes of six songs were completed:

  • 'I've Just Seen A Face'
  • 'I'm Down'
  • 'Yesterday'
  • 'It's Only Love'
  • 'Act Naturally'
  • 'Help!'

'Wait' and the Road to Rubber Soul

'Wait' received a mono mix in the morning session but was ultimately deemed surplus to requirements for Help!. The track was set aside — but not abandoned. Later in 1965, the recording was reworked and included on Rubber Soul, released in December of that year. It is one of the more unusual cases in The Beatles' catalogue: a song recorded for one album, shelved, and then revived for the next.

'Wait' had been recorded on 17 June 1965 — the day before these mixing sessions — along with the basic track for 'Yesterday'. The decision to drop it from Help! was made quickly; the mono mix created on 18 June was essentially a reference copy rather than a release candidate.

The Help! Album in Context

By 18 June 1965, Help! was essentially complete. The album had been recorded in a compressed period between February and June 1965, alongside the filming of the Help! movie. It was a period of extraordinary productivity — and, for some of the group, of growing strain.

The songs mixed on 18 June represent a cross-section of the album's range. 'I've Just Seen A Face' and 'It's Only Love' were McCartney and Lennon compositions respectively, both recorded in June 1965. 'Act Naturally' was a Buck Owens cover sung by Ringo Starr — one of his two lead vocal performances on the album. 'I'm Down' was McCartney's hard rock B-side to 'Help!', recorded on the same day as 'Yesterday'. And 'Yesterday' itself — recorded on 14 June 1965 with McCartney alone and a string quartet arranged by George Martin — was already, even before its release, something apart from the rest of the album.

Help! was released in the UK on 6 August 1965. 'Yesterday' was not released as a single in the UK until March 1976 — over a decade after these mixing sessions.

In the 1960s, mono was the primary format — most listeners heard music on mono record players and radios. Stereo mixes were prepared for the growing hi-fi market but were often treated as secondary. The Beatles themselves were primarily involved in mono mixing sessions; stereo mixes were sometimes prepared quickly and with less attention. This is why mono versions of many Beatles albums are considered by collectors to be the definitive versions.
