On 27 May 1961, The Beatles performed at the Top Ten Club in Hamburg — the 57th night of their longest Hamburg residency, during which they played a total of 92 nights at the club. It was a Saturday, which meant the group were required to play from 8pm until 4am, with a 15-minute break in each hour.

Reeperbahn 136, St Pauli, Hamburg — the location of the Top Ten Club, where The Beatles performed 92 nights in 1961.

The Top Ten Club Residency

The Beatles' Top Ten Club residency ran from 1 April to 1 July 1961 — 92 nights, making it their longest single Hamburg engagement. The club was owned by Peter Eckhorn, who paid each Beatle 35DM (approximately £3) per day. The performance schedule was demanding:

  • Weekdays: 7pm until 2am (with a 15-minute break per hour)
  • Weekends: 8pm until 4am (with a 15-minute break per hour)

The performances were so successful that Eckhorn twice extended The Beatles' contract. By the time they played their final show on 1 July 1961, they had performed on stage for a total of 503 hours during their stay.

The Top Ten Club

The Top Ten Club was located at Reeperbahn 136 in Hamburg's St Pauli district, on the main strip of the city's entertainment quarter. It was a step up from The Beatles' previous Hamburg venues — the Indra and Kaiserkeller, where they had performed in 1960 — in terms of both prestige and pay.

The club had originally been a cinema. Peter Eckhorn had converted it into a music venue and was in direct competition with Bruno Koschmider, who ran the Indra and Kaiserkeller. The Beatles had first come to Eckhorn's attention when they were performing at the Kaiserkeller in late 1960, and he had poached them — a move that led to a furious Koschmider having George Harrison deported for being under 18, and Paul McCartney and Pete Best briefly arrested on a spurious arson charge.

The Beatles in May 1961

By 27 May 1961, The Beatles had been in Hamburg for nearly two months of their current residency. The line-up was:

  • John Lennon — rhythm guitar, vocals
  • Paul McCartney — bass guitar, vocals
  • George Harrison — lead guitar
  • Pete Best — drums

Stuart Sutcliffe had left the group in January 1961 to stay in Hamburg with his fiancée Astrid Kirchherr and study at the Hamburg College of Art. McCartney had taken over on bass.

Also during this residency, on 22–23 June 1961, The Beatles recorded at Friedrich-Ebert-Halle in Hamburg, backing singer Tony Sheridan for producer Bert Kaempfert. These sessions produced 'My Bonnie', 'The Saints', and several other tracks — The Beatles' first professional recordings. It was a fan's enquiry about the 'My Bonnie' single at NEMS record shop in Liverpool that would bring The Beatles to Brian Epstein's attention in October 1961.

The Hamburg Residencies

The Top Ten Club residency was The Beatles' third Hamburg engagement:

  • Indra Club — August–September 1960 (closed by police)
  • Kaiserkeller — October–November 1960
  • Top Ten Club — 1 April–1 July 1961 (92 nights, 503 hours)

The Star-Club residencies followed in 1962 (April–May, November, and December).
