Star-Club, Große Freiheit 39, Hamburg, West Germany

On 27 May 1962, The Beatles performed at the Star-Club in Hamburg — their 44th of 48 nights during their first residency at the venue. The first Star-Club residency ran from 13 April to 31 May 1962, with The Beatles performing for a total of 172 hours over seven weeks. Their only night off was Good Friday, 20 April. The Beatles left Hamburg on Saturday 2 June 1962.

Große Freiheit 39, St Pauli, Hamburg — the location of the Star-Club, where The Beatles performed 48 nights during their first residency in 1962.

The Star-Club

The Star-Club opened on 13 April 1962 — the same night The Beatles began their first residency there. Located at Große Freiheit 39 in Hamburg's St Pauli district, it was the city's newest and most ambitious rock and roll venue, run by Manfred Weissleäder. The club could hold around 2,000 people and was designed to attract the biggest names in rock and roll — its opening season also featured Gene Vincent and Little Richard.

The Star-Club represented a significant step up from The Beatles' previous Hamburg venues. The Indra and Kaiserkeller (1960) had been rougher, smaller clubs in the same Große Freiheit area; the Top Ten Club (1961) had been a step forward in terms of prestige. The Star-Club was the pinnacle of the Hamburg rock scene, and The Beatles' booking there — secured by their new manager Brian Epstein — reflected their growing reputation.

The First Star-Club Residency

The first Star-Club residency ran from 13 April to 31 May 1962 — 48 nights, with only Good Friday (20 April) as a night off. The Beatles performed for a total of 172 hours over the seven-week stint. The residency was gruelling by any standard: multiple sets per night, seven nights a week, in a loud and demanding environment.

The residency coincided with a pivotal moment in The Beatles' story. On 10 April 1962 — three days before the Star-Club residency began — Stuart Sutcliffe, The Beatles' original bass player and John Lennon's closest friend, had died of a brain haemorrhage in Hamburg. He was 21. Sutcliffe had left the group in 1961 to stay in Hamburg with his fiancée Astrid Kirchherr, and had been studying at the Hamburg College of Art. His death cast a shadow over the opening weeks of the residency.

Also during this residency, on 24 April 1962, The Beatles had their first professional recording session — at Friedrich-Ebert-Halle in Hamburg, produced by Bert Kaempfert, backing singer Tony Sheridan on tracks including 'My Bonnie'. These recordings had already been released in Germany, and it was a fan's enquiry about them at NEMS record shop in Liverpool that had first brought The Beatles to Brian Epstein's attention in October 1961.

The Hamburg Residencies

By May 1962, The Beatles had been performing in Hamburg for nearly two years across three clubs:

  • Indra Club — August–September 1960 (closed by police due to noise complaints)
  • Kaiserkeller — October–November 1960
  • Top Ten Club — March–July 1961
  • Star-Club (first residency) — 13 April–31 May 1962

Two further Star-Club residencies followed later in 1962: 1–14 November and 18–31 December. The December residency — The Beatles' last Hamburg engagement — was recorded by journalist Adrian Volck on a portable tape recorder, and the recordings were eventually released as Live! At The Star-Club in Hamburg, Germany; 1962 in 1977.

The Beatles in May 1962

By 27 May 1962, The Beatles were on the verge of a breakthrough that none of them could yet see clearly. Brian Epstein had been managing them since January 1962 and had secured a recording test with EMI — scheduled for 6 June 1962, just days after the end of this Hamburg residency. That session, at Abbey Road Studios with producer George Martin, would lead to their first single, 'Love Me Do', released in October 1962.

The group performing on 27 May 1962 was the classic four-piece: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Pete Best on drums. Ringo Starr — who had deputised for Best on several occasions — would replace him permanently in August 1962, two months after the EMI session.
