The Silver Beetles live: Regal Ballroom, Nairn – 27 May 1960
Friday 27 May 1960 | Live
Regal Ballroom, Leopold Street, Nairn, Scotland
On 27 May 1960, the Silver Beetles performed at the Regal Ballroom on Leopold Street in Nairn — the penultimate show of their Scottish tour as the backing band for Liverpool singer Johnny Gentle. By this point the group had barely any money, and the financial desperation came to a head during a phone call Gentle made to tour promoter Larry Parnes in London — when an angry John Lennon grabbed the receiver.

The Scottish Tour
The Silver Beetles' Scottish tour with Johnny Gentle ran from 20 to 28 May 1960 — nine dates across the Scottish Highlands and north-east, arranged by Liverpool promoter Allan Williams and London impresario Larry Parnes. It was the group's first professional tour, and their first time performing outside the Liverpool area.
The tour had been secured through an audition held by Parnes at the Wyvern Social Club in Liverpool on 10 May 1960, at which the Silver Beetles — along with several other Liverpool groups — had performed for Parnes and his associate Billy Fury. Parnes was impressed enough to book them as Gentle's backing band, though he paid them poorly and the tour was financially precarious from the start.
The Phone Call
By the time of the Nairn show, the group's financial situation had become desperate. Johnny Gentle later recalled the moment Lennon intervened during a phone call to Parnes, as quoted in Philip Norman's biography John Lennon: The Life:
“He didn't hold back. It was like, 'We're fuckin' skint up here. We haven't got a pot to piss in. We need money, Larry!' Anyway, it seemed to work because [Allan] Williams did send them up a few pounds more.”
— Johnny Gentle, quoted in John Lennon: The Life by Philip Norman
The anecdote is characteristic of the early Lennon — direct, confrontational, and unwilling to accept poor treatment without protest. It also illustrates the precarious economics of the early Beatles story: even on their first professional tour, the group were barely surviving financially.
The Silver Beetles
The group performing in Nairn on 27 May 1960 were operating under the name Silver Beetles — one of several name variations used in this period, including the Quarrymen, the Silver Beats, and the Beat Brothers. The line-up on the Scottish tour was:
- John Lennon — rhythm guitar, vocals
- Paul McCartney — bass guitar, vocals
- George Harrison — lead guitar
- Stuart Sutcliffe — bass guitar
- Tommy Moore — drums
Tommy Moore was a temporary drummer who had been recruited specifically for the tour. He was older than the others — in his late twenties — and worked at a bottle factory in Liverpool. He left the group shortly after the Scottish tour ended. Pete Best joined as permanent drummer in August 1960, just before the group's first Hamburg residency.
Johnny Gentle
Johnny Gentle (born John Askew, 1941) was a Liverpool-born singer signed to Larry Parnes' stable of artists — a roster that included Billy Fury, Marty Wilde, and Vince Eager, all given suitably dramatic stage names by Parnes. Gentle had a minor UK hit with 'Wendy' in 1959. The Scottish tour was one of his first major engagements, and his recollections of the Silver Beetles — recorded in several interviews and biographies — are among the few first-hand accounts of the group at this very early stage.
Larry Parnes
Larry Parnes (1929–1989) was one of the most important figures in British pop management in the late 1950s and early 1960s. His stable of artists — managed with a combination of shrewd commercial instinct and tight financial control — dominated the British pop scene before The Beatles changed everything. Parnes had considered taking on The Beatles as a backing band on a more permanent basis but ultimately decided against it, a decision that would prove to be one of the great missed opportunities in music business history.
