Beatles Studio Session: 13th February 1967 – The Making of "A Day In The Life" & "Only A Northern Song"
On 13th February 1967, the Fab Four returned to Abbey Road's Studio Two for an intense marathon session that would shape two of their most intriguing tracks. From 7:00 pm to 3:30 am, the Beatles were deep in the creative process, working on what would become highlights of the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band era.
This session came after the orchestral recording on 10th February and before the final marathon session on 22nd February.
Mono Mixing "A Day In The Life"
This session focused on mono mixing "A Day In The Life". Remarkably, the takes worked on that night—RM 2-5 of take 7—have never surfaced on any official release. For Beatles collectors and audiophiles, this represents one of the many hidden gems of the band's studio archive. Fans often speculate about the subtle differences in these lost mixes, making this a session shrouded in mystery and fascination.
Recording "Only A Northern Song"
Alongside their work on "A Day In The Life," the Beatles also laid down the basic rhythm tracks for George Harrison's "Only A Northern Song", covering takes 1-9. While these early tracks were raw, elements of takes 3, 11, and 12 eventually appeared on Yellow Submarine, Anthology 2, the Yellow Submarine Songtrack, and various bootlegs. This session captures the experimental spirit that Harrison brought to the band during this era, exploring new textures and arrangements.
