20th February 1967 – Constructing the Fairground Soundscape at EMI Studios
On Monday 20th February 1967, The Beatles convened in Studio Three at EMI Studios, London, from 7.00pm to 2.15am.
Session Documentation
Recording: "Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite!" (effects overdubs; tape box notes indicate unnumbered work)
Mono mixing: "Good Morning, Good Morning" (RM1 from Take 10)
This session followed the principal recording of the basic track for "Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite!" on 17th February 1967. The 20th February date was devoted primarily to effects overdubbing and tape manipulation, rather than a new rhythm-track performance.
"Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite!" – Effects Construction
The song appears on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and was inspired by an 1843 circus poster purchased in Sevenoaks by John Lennon in January 1967. Lennon drew heavily from the poster's original wording.
On 20th February, producer George Martin and engineer Geoff Emerick supervised the assembly of a tape collage intended to evoke a Victorian fairground atmosphere.
According to studio documentation and later technical accounts:
- Recordings of steam organs and calliopes were sourced from EMI's tape library.
- The tapes were cut into short sections.
- These sections were physically rearranged.
- The reassembled fragments were then spliced together and mixed into the four-track master.
The tape box does not indicate a numbered performance take for this work, supporting the conclusion that this was overdubbed effects material added to the existing master, rather than a complete new take of the song.
Elements from these sessions are represented in officially released archival collections, including Anthology 2 (1996) and the 2017 Sgt. Pepper Super Deluxe Edition. However, no substantially different complete performance from this specific 20th February effects session has surfaced beyond the officially released material.
Mono Mixing: "Good Morning, Good Morning"
During the same session, the team created Remix Mono 1 (RM1) of "Good Morning, Good Morning" from Take 10.
In early 1967, mono was the primary commercial format in the UK, and The Beatles were directly involved in shaping mono mixes. The animal-sound montage at the end of the track — assembled through careful editing — reflects the same tape manipulation techniques that characterised the "Mr. Kite!" effects work.
Historical Context
By February 1967:
- The band had permanently ceased touring.
- Studio experimentation had become central to their creative process.
- Tape editing and sound collage were being treated as compositional tools.
The 20th February session exemplifies the production methodology that defined Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band: layered overdubs, reduction mixes, and deliberate studio manipulation rather than live ensemble performance.

Photo captures John Arriving for the session
The photograph captures John Lennon arriving at EMI Studios on the evening of 20 February 1967, during the height of the Sgt. Pepper sessions. At this stage in early 1967, Lennon's appearance reflected the band's shift into its psychedelic studio era — longer hair, more individualised style, and a clear move away from the uniform touring image of previous years. The image is significant not simply as a candid arrival shot, but as documentation of Lennon entering one of the most technically inventive sessions of The Beatles' recording career.
