Events on 7 May
1961 – The Beatles Live at Top Ten Club Hamburg
Night 37 of The Beatles' gruelling 92-night Top Ten Club residency. Playing from 7pm to 2am on weekdays and 8pm to 4am on weekends for just 35DM a day, the band were accumulating hundreds of hours of stage time that would forge their legendary tightness as a live act.
1962 – The Beatles at the Star-Club Hamburg
Night 24 of the band's 48-night Star-Club residency — the final chapter of their Hamburg apprenticeship. Over seven weeks and 172 hours of performance, The Beatles shifted from skiffle to full-throttle rock 'n' roll, bridging the gap between Liverpool's local scene and their imminent global breakthrough.
1965 – The Beatles Filming Help! at Twickenham Studios
Back at Twickenham for another day on their second feature film. Director Richard Lester filmed a key surrealist comedy sequence in which Paul McCartney's character is accidentally injected with reducing fluid — a scene that perfectly captures the anarchic spirit of Help! and its departure from the naturalism of A Hard Day's Night.
1969 – Get Back Album Mixing Session at Olympic Studios
An overnight session (8pm to 7:30am) at Olympic Studios as Glyn Johns shaped his "warts and all" vision for the Get Back album — live performance energy, studio chatter and all. Under George Martin's oversight, this raw material would eventually evolve into the Let It Be album and Peter Jackson's acclaimed documentary.
1971 – RAM Final Mixing Session, Los Angeles
Paul and Linda McCartney completed the final mono mixes for the RAM album at Sound Recorders Studio in Los Angeles, engineered by Eirik Wangberg. Released in the US on 17 May and the UK on 21 May 1971, RAM was a landmark early solo statement — and these mono mixes were officially released decades later as part of the Paul McCartney Archive Collection.
1973 – Wings Recording Zoo Gang at EMI Studios
Wings completed recording of "Zoo Gang" at Abbey Road Studios, adding a distinctive accordion overdub to the track produced by Paul McCartney and engineered by John Leckie. Mixed at AIR Studios on 14 May, it became the UK B-side to "Band on the Run" in 1974 — a curio that rewards the dedicated fan.
1976 – Wings Live at Olympia Stadium Detroit
Show 30 of 65 on the Wings Over The World Tour, performed at Olympia Stadium in Detroit. The expanded brass section was in full effect, and the live version of "Lady Madonna" recorded here appeared on the Wings Over America album. The setlist ranged from "Jet" and "Band on the Run" to "Blackbird," "Yesterday," and a rousing close of "Hi, Hi, Hi" and "Soily."
1993 – Paul McCartney Live at Williams-Brice Stadium, Columbia SC
Date 24 of the New World Tour, drawing 37,646 fans to Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina. With Linda McCartney, Hamish Stuart, Robbie McIntosh, Wix Wickens and Blair Cunningham in the band, McCartney delivered a set blending Beatles classics, Wings hits, solo material, and acoustic numbers — a night that reflected his reflections on family and art shared on the Today Show that same week.
2002 – Paul McCartney Live at Pepsi Center, Denver
Show 20 of the Driving World Tour, with approximately 14,700 fans at the Pepsi Center in Denver. Backed by Wix Wickens, Brian Ray, Rusty Anderson and Abe Laboriel Jr., McCartney opened with "Hello, Goodbye" and delivered emotional performances of "Here Today" and "Something" — a set spanning Beatles classics, Wings favourites, and new material from Driving Rain.
