Wings Live at Olympia Stadium, Detroit – 7 May 1976
On 7 May 1976, Wings performed at Detroit's legendary Olympia Stadium during the North American leg of the Wings Over The World Tour, one of the biggest and most ambitious tours of Paul McCartney's post-Beatles career.
The concert marked the 30th show of the massive 65-date world tour and the first of two consecutive nights in Detroit. By this stage, Wings had evolved into a polished arena rock powerhouse capable of blending Beatles classics, solo material, and newer Wings hits into one expansive live production.
The Wings Line-Up in 1976
The 1976 touring line-up featured Paul McCartney on vocals, bass, guitar, and keyboards; Linda McCartney on vocals and keyboards; Denny Laine on vocals, guitar, and bass; Jimmy McCulloch on guitar and vocals; and Joe English on drums.
Supporting the core band was an expanded brass and horn section consisting of Howie Casey, Tony Dorsey, Steve Howard, and Thaddeus Richard, helping give the tour its larger and more theatrical live sound.
A Historic Live Recording
One of the most notable moments from the Detroit performance was Wings' version of “Lady Madonna”, which was later included on the 1976 live album Wings Over America.
The inclusion of the performance on the live album cemented this concert's place within Wings history, capturing the energy and confidence of the band during their peak touring era.
Concert Highlights
The setlist balanced newer Wings material with Beatles favourites and solo-era classics. Songs such as “Jet”, “Band on the Run”, “Silly Love Songs”, and “Live and Let Die” showcased the scale and ambition of McCartney's 1970s live performances.
Acoustic moments including “Blackbird” and “Yesterday” provided contrast to the heavier arena rock material, while closing numbers like “Hi, Hi, Hi” and “Soily” brought the concert to an explosive finish.
