Wings live: Omni Coliseum, Atlanta – 19 May 1976
Wednesday 19 May 1976 | Live
Omni Coliseum, Atlanta, Georgia, USA
Wings performed at the Omni Coliseum in Atlanta, Georgia — night 39 of 65 on the Wings Over The World Tour, and the second of two consecutive nights in Atlanta. The 29-song set was one of the longest of any rock tour of the era, and included songs McCartney had not performed live since The Beatles' final concert in 1966.
The Wings Over The World Tour
The Wings Over The World Tour was the largest concert tour undertaken by any former Beatle up to that point. It ran from March to September 1976, covering Australia, Europe, the United Kingdom, and North America, with 65 shows in total. The North American leg — which included the Atlanta dates — was the first time McCartney had toured the United States since The Beatles' final US tour in August 1966.
The tour grossed over $25 million and was seen by more than 600,000 people. It was documented in the film Rockshow, filmed at the Seattle Center Coliseum in June 1976 and released theatrically in 1980.
Wings in 1976
The Wings line-up for the tour consisted of Paul McCartney (vocals, bass, guitar), Linda McCartney (keyboards, vocals), Denny Laine (guitar, vocals), Jimmy McCulloch (guitar), and Joe English (drums). McCulloch and English would both leave Wings in 1977, before the recording of London Town.
The Setlist
The 29-song set was exceptional in length and ambition for a rock concert of the era. It included Wings material from Wild Life, Red Rose Speedway, Band on the Run, Venus and Mars, and Wings at the Speed of Sound, as well as Beatles songs including 'Yesterday', 'Lady Madonna', 'The Long and Winding Road', and 'Let It Be' — songs McCartney had not performed live since 1966. 'Live And Let Die' was performed with a full pyrotechnic display.
The Omni Coliseum
The Omni Coliseum was a multi-purpose indoor arena in downtown Atlanta, opened in 1972. It had a capacity of around 16,000 for concerts and was one of the premier rock venues in the American South during the 1970s and 1980s. It was demolished in 1997 and replaced by Philips Arena (now State Farm Arena).
