The Nerk Twins live: Fox And Hounds, Caversham

Sunday 24 April 1960 | Live

This was the second and final appearance by The Nerk Twins, the early performance alias used by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, at the Fox And Hounds pub in Caversham, Berkshire.

The pub was run by McCartney's cousin Bett Robbins and her husband Mike Robbins, who had previously worked as Butlins Redcoats. During their visit, Lennon and McCartney spent time working behind the bar and staying with the family.

The pair performed during the pub's busy lunchtime session, from 12pm to 2pm, playing acoustic guitars and singing without amplification.

After the performance, Lennon and McCartney reportedly hitch-hiked back to Liverpool.

Performance Context

This early collaboration formed part of a formative period in Lennon and McCartney's relationship, during which they frequently travelled together and developed their songwriting partnership. For more on the early years, see The Beatles Early Contracts (1959–1965).

"John and I used to hitch-hike places together… it was a very wonderful period… our show-business dreams were formed by this guy and his wife." — Paul McCartney (Many Years From Now, Barry Miles)

The Robbins family environment exposed the pair to informal entertainment industry experiences, which later influenced their understanding of performance and show business.
