The Cavern Club
The Cavern Club opened on 16 January 1957 as a jazz venue in a cellar at 10 Mathew Street, Liverpool. By the early 1960s it had become the epicentre of the Merseybeat scene, hosting hundreds of performances by The Beatles and dozens of other local groups.
The Beatles first performed at the Cavern on 9 February 1961 and continued to play there until 3 August 1963 — by which point they were already one of the most famous groups in Britain. Although the precise total of their Cavern appearances is not known with certainty, they played at least 155 lunchtime and 125 evening shows at the venue.
It was at the Cavern that Brian Epstein first saw The Beatles perform, on 9 November 1961, leading to him becoming their manager. It was also where Ringo Starr was first seen by the group as a potential replacement for Pete Best, having sat in with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes at the venue on several occasions.
The original Cavern Club was demolished in 1973 to make way for a ventilation shaft for the Merseyrail underground loop line. A reconstruction opened on the same site in 1984 and remains open today as one of Liverpool’s most visited tourist attractions. The Cavern Club was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status as part of the Liverpool – Maritime Mercantile City designation.
