The Beatles performed at the Casbah Coffee Club in Hayman Green, Liverpool on 13 August 1961 — their 13th appearance at the venue. The Casbah was owned and run by Mona Best, mother of Beatles drummer Pete Best. The group played there a total of 37 times between 1960 and 1962.
The Casbah Coffee Club
The Casbah Coffee Club was opened by Mona Best in the basement of her home at 8 Hayman’s Green, West Derby, Liverpool, on 29 August 1959 — the same night The Quarrymen (the group that would become The Beatles) performed there for the first time. The club became one of the most important early venues in the development of the Merseybeat scene.
The Quarrymen performed at the Casbah on seven occasions in 1959: 29 August; 5, 12, 19 and 26 September; and 3 and 10 October.
By the time the group had become The Beatles, the Casbah remained a regular fixture on their Liverpool circuit. Pete Best had joined the group in August 1960, just before their first Hamburg trip, and his mother’s club continued to host them throughout 1961 and into 1962 — right up to the eve of their breakthrough.
The Casbah Coffee Club was designated a Grade II listed building and is now a museum open to the public. It was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status as part of the Liverpool – Maritime Mercantile City designation.
