The Cavern Club

The Cavern Club opened in January 1957 as a jazz venue in the cellar of a warehouse at 10 Mathew Street, Liverpool. By 1961 it had become the heartbeat of the Liverpool beat scene, hosting lunchtime and evening sessions that drew huge local crowds.

The Beatles first performed at the Cavern on 9 February 1961. The precise total number of their appearances is not known, but at least 155 lunchtime performances and 125 evening shows are documented between 9 February 1961 and their final Cavern appearance on 3 August 1963.

The line-up at this time was John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Pete Best on drums. Ringo Starr would not join the group until August 1962.
