Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band performed at the Palace Theatre in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on 20 May 1997 — the 17th show of the fourth All-Starr Band's 30-date US tour, which ran between April and June 1997.
The All-Starr Band Concept
Ringo Starr launched the All-Starr Band concept in 1989 as a way of returning to live performance while sharing the stage with musicians he admired. The format is distinctive: each member of the band performs their own hits as well as backing Ringo on his. This creates a rotating revue structure in which the audience hears a succession of well-known songs from across rock history, with Ringo as the constant thread. The 1997 edition was the fourth iteration of the band.
The Fourth All-Starr Band
The 1997 line-up was one of the most musically distinguished of any All-Starr Band:
- Ringo Starr — vocals, drums, percussion
- Peter Frampton — guitar, vocals. Best known for Frampton Comes Alive! (1976), one of the best-selling live albums of all time.
- Jack Bruce — bass guitar, keyboards, guitar, vocals. Co-founder of Cream with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker; writer of 'White Room', 'Sunshine Of Your Love', and 'I Feel Free'.
- Gary Brooker — keyboards, organ, vocals. Founder and vocalist of Procol Harum; writer and singer of 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale' (1967) and 'Conquistador'.
- Mark Rivera — saxophone, guitar, organ, keyboards, percussion, vocals. A veteran session musician and touring player who has worked with Billy Joel since 1982.
- Simon Kirke — vocals, drums. Co-founder of Free and Bad Company; associated with 'All Right Now' and 'Shooting Star'.
