Friday 27 October 1989 | Live concert | PalaTrussardi, Milan, Italy
Paul McCartney performed at the PalaTrussardi in Milan on 27 October 1989, returning for the second of two consecutive nights at the venue. It was the 19th concert of the Paul McCartney World Tour, a 102-date journey across 14 countries between September 1989 and July 1990.
The evening has a particular place in McCartney’s live recording history: its performance of All My Trials appeared on Tripping the Live Fantastic – Highlights! and became a single in November 1990. Milan therefore contributed more than another date to the itinerary; one of its performances reached listeners well beyond the hall.

The second night in Milan
McCartney’s Italian concerts followed the tour’s earlier European stops. After the PalaEUR concert in Rome on 24 October, the band travelled north for the Milan engagement.
The first PalaTrussardi show took place on 26 October. Returning on the 27th gave the city a second evening of Beatles songs, Wings favourites and material from Flowers in the Dirt. The next tour concerts were at Zürich’s Hallenstadion on 29 and 30 October.
The set ranged from Figure of Eight and My Brave Face to Hey Jude and the closing Abbey Road sequence. All My Trials brought a contrasting song into that programme and supplied the performance that would later represent Milan on record.
The touring band
McCartney’s six-piece band handled the changing instrumental and vocal demands of the set, moving between rock songs, piano-led performances and harmony-rich arrangements.
| Musician | Role |
|---|---|
| Paul McCartney | Lead vocals, bass, guitar and keyboards |
| Linda McCartney | Keyboards, vocals and percussion |
| Hamish Stuart | Guitar, bass and vocals |
| Robbie McIntosh | Guitar and vocals |
| Paul ‘Wix’ Wickens | Keyboards and vocals |
| Chris Whitten | Drums and percussion |
All My Trials: from Milan to a live single
The official All My Trials release notes identify this concert as the source of the live recording. The single was released on 26 November 1990, more than a year after the performance, with C Moon on its B-side.
All My Trials also appeared on Tripping the Live Fantastic – Highlights!, rather than the main Tripping the Live Fantastic album. Its inclusion gave the abridged collection a recording absent from the longer album.
The two sides of the single connect the consecutive Milan dates: All My Trials came from the 27 October concert, while C Moon was recorded during the 26 October soundcheck. They are separate performances from different parts of the engagement.
Flowers in the Dirt, Wings and the Beatles
The opening Figure of Eight placed McCartney’s current work at the front of the show. Rough Ride, We Got Married, Put It There, This One and My Brave Face continued that Flowers in the Dirt thread throughout the evening.
Wings songs provided another strand, including Jet, Band on the Run and Live and Let Die. Beatles material ran from early songs such as I Saw Her Standing There and Can’t Buy Me Love to Eleanor Rigby and the Golden Slumbers, Carry That Weight and The End finale.
