Monday 4 November 1974 | Studio session | Paul McCartney and Wings | By Beatles Fabdom

On 4 November 1974, the final mixing session for Wings’ film One Hand Clapping took place in Studio Two at EMI Studios, Abbey Road, London. Paul McCartney produced the session, with Geoff Emerick and Mark Vigars engineering.

Director David Litchfield had arranged a screening for a BBC executive, hoping to secure a British television broadcast. The November session prepared the last of the film’s audio for that presentation. The BBC did not take up the project, and the documentary remained unreleased until its inclusion in the 2010 Band On The Run Archive Collection reissue.

The film preserved Wings working at Abbey Road in 1974, with Jimmy McCulloch and Geoff Britton alongside Paul, Linda McCartney and Denny Laine. A separate One Hand Clapping album eventually appeared on 14 June 2024, followed by cinema screenings of the film that September.

From the August recordings to the final mix

One Hand Clapping began as a filmed studio project in August 1974. Wings assembled at Abbey Road while Band On The Run was enjoying a successful UK chart run. Litchfield directed a documentary built around performances, studio activity and interviews with the musicians.

The project combined familiar material with other selections from McCartney’s repertoire. It offered a record of the group playing together in a studio environment, as well as the possibility of a live-in-the-studio album.

Work continued after the principal filming. September mixing sessions prepared audio for the film, while the accompanying solo performances recorded by McCartney in the studio’s backyard were considered for a separate programme. By 4 November, the remaining film audio was being completed for Litchfield’s proposed BBC presentation.

Preparing One Hand Clapping for the BBC

Litchfield’s proposed screening gave the November work a practical objective: preparing the completed programme for television consideration. McCartney, Emerick and Vigars worked on the remaining audio in Studio Two.

The BBC did not proceed with the film. Consequently, the completed project did not reach the television audience Litchfield had hoped to secure, and no contemporary release followed.

The film’s later history extended across several formats. Recordings circulated among collectors, individual performances appeared on official McCartney releases, and the documentary itself eventually became available through the Archive Collection.

The Wings line-up in the film

The band documented in One Hand Clapping comprised Paul McCartney, Linda McCartney, Denny Laine, Jimmy McCulloch and Geoff Britton. McCulloch and Britton had joined the group following the Band On The Run period, expanding the core trio into a five-piece.

That is also the Wings configuration heard on Junior’s Farm. The single’s American release took place on 4 November 1974, the same day as this final mixing session. Its Nashville recordings had already reached British shops through the UK release on 25 October.

The two projects document different parts of the group’s 1974 work: a Nashville single and a filmed London studio performance, both featuring the new band.

Studio Two at EMI Studios

The final mixing session took place at the Abbey Road complex familiar from the Beatles’ recording years. Studio Two remained a working location for McCartney after the group’s split and was the setting for Wings’ filmed performances that summer.

Abbey Road Studios stands at 3 Abbey Road, St John’s Wood, London NW8 9AY. The map below identifies the studio building.

The film’s official release in 2010

One Hand Clapping received an official release within the 2010 Band On The Run Archive Collection reissue. This brought the long-shelved documentary into McCartney’s programme of expanded catalogue editions.

The 2010 release gave viewers access to the film, but the complete project’s audio history continued beyond that edition. Several recordings had appeared separately over the years, and the later standalone album drew together the film performances with additional material recorded off camera.

The 2024 album and cinema screenings

The One Hand Clapping album was released on 14 June 2024. Its packaging used artwork originally designed for the project, including material connected with the television sales brochure prepared when the film was new.

McCartney’s official album page describes the release as bringing together audio for the film with additional songs recorded off camera.

Limited cinema screenings began on 26 September 2024. The programme included a new introduction by McCartney, previously unseen Polaroids and the fuller solo acoustic Backyard Sessions footage. These screenings followed the June album release, fifty years after the original studio project.
